Since we can take 115-point-or-less carnifex as elites, I've been trying to rethink how to equip them to be effective in 5th. With the change in firing styles of blast weapons, it's now very feasible to take a barbed strangler on an Elite Carnifex without taking Enhanced Senses, leaving you 10 points to mess around with. I would recommend putting those points into a Twin-linked Devourer, as it reinforces the Carnifex' shooting role, and re-roll to hit, re-roll to wound has a very good rate of damaging opponents.
EDIT: Sorry about saying Carnifex as Troops, early morning posts aren't always reliable for me.

My gaming group's new motto: That army you're using is overpowered because it hurts my guys, codex is broken and needs a rewrite.
woah woah woah... as troops? or is that a mistype? and yeah, i think the BS and TL dev will be nice to see. but you just made me think of a fully TMC list army, lol 2 HT 3 Elite fexes 3 Heavy fexes and 6 troop fexes, that would be over kill...... but funny to see..
No sig required.
I asked about the 115 point barbed strangler and twin devourer carnifex as an elite on here a few days ago. but i found out it has to be LESS THAN 115, so 114 maximum to be an elite choice. no 115 points carnifexs for anything but heavy. 114 or less.
i'm not sure about the troop choice option for carnifex, i guess you meant elite.
true so the twin linked devourers are out - however fun that might sound!
I think scything talons are the best thing for him - lowers his potential as a walking gun, but he is cheap and the strangler now has a better hit rate.
and just think you could have 6 stranglers on the battlefield at once - death to any other swarmy army (lookin at you orcs!)

yeah the scything talon and barbed strangler idea would work, at 113 points. haha yeah 6 of those with range of 36" would be great. but i'm pretty much sold on the idea of the dakka at 113.
well those are two good choices to give to your ranged elite carnifexs!
If you really want this Carnifex to be a walking gun you can take a barbed strangler and spine banks instead of the scything talons. The second weapon symbiote could be rending claws. Rending claws are rather useless on a Carnifex but the cheaper cost will allow for the spine banks. The spine banks being twin linked could give a better ability to kill mobs of cheap infantry at close range than one pair of scything talons. I would aslo suggest that the remaining 'point' be spent on flesh hooks. Flesh hooks isn't amazing but it is very cheap and useful at times.
make that three good choices for a ranged elite carnifex then. so many possibilites - thats why i like tyranids so much
How are Flesh Hooks useful at all now with the new rules for 'nades when speaking of putting them on a Carnifex of course. He already strikes at I1 without AG.
I've used the BS elite fex a few times and found it to be worth it when it hits. I mean for a few extra points having the option of a S8 Large Blast template that hits where you want it just a little over 1/3 of the time is excellent.
Flesh hooks are particularly useful for fexes because it lets you treat vertically impassable terrain as difficult terrain instead. This helps them to find high ground or to get to enemy models that are on a cliff or building.
As for the elite strangler talon fex (AKA the mini defiler), I have not found it as useful as I had hoped. While it did well enough for me, it never seems to perform as well as the Dakafex.
