So I'm planning on buying my first army; which is going to be Tyranids. I'll be buying the assault brood, and I'm assuming that there are going to be other things that I would want to pick up if I'm planning on building a swarmy type of army. I was hoping I could be enlightened on any of the extra things I should buy, and if there were any shortcomings that usually apply to new tyranid players.
Not intending to sound mean here, but you really haven't given us anything to work with, you're essentially asking everyone to design an army list for you. If you're interested in looking over some sample lists from veteran players look at the Tyranid Army Lists board, it should help you out and give you an idea of what to, and not to, take.
I'm new to Tyranids myself and the biggest heap I came across was figuring out the Bio-Morphs and what units benefit most from them. For that I went to the "Tyranid Unit Tactica" sticky, it is an excellent resource for new players.

I know how you feel, when I first started out I didn't know what I really needed or not. Ok obviously you need a codex and with the assault brood you actually have a good swarm foundation. What I would suggest you might want to consider getting...
(2-3) they work well for synapes coverage, they can pack a heck of a punch and they are hard to kill so they will last longer then your warriors sometimes.
Warriors don't make great HQ choices, nothings wrong with them but they just don't really do a whole lot for you. A tyrant can make a world of difference.
I would strongly suggest looking through the carnifex/tyrant and the warrior build lists on this forum they will give you a good idea of the different kinds of builds you can have and what they can do. If you want a swarm army then you will need more gaunts, if you want a fast hitting army take gargoyles and a winged tyrant and maybe some raveners

You should look at perhaps investing in a Hive Tyrant. Even in aswarm army they are very useful to have. Also take a look at Perhaps using a Broodlord. The fact is you want to try and get away from using Warriors as HQ as they aren't all that good for it. They're kinda squishy.
I think a good idea is to read around this website as much as you can. there's a lot of useful knowledge on here. It will really help. oh and you've gotta get a Codex.
What I think you should do is go to your local store, play a few games, buy models you like, play around with lists and test them at your local store again (play against a freind who will be happy to spend a few hours helping you), then do all the buying! the main thing is to have fun, so dont stress out!

I think a good thing to think about is what attracted you to Tyranids in the first place, was it the massive swarm idea, loads of close combat critters, or huge monsters. there are people who solely field a genestealer army because they love them so much.
so i guess some good advice would to be make a force that you can get attached to, however dorky that sounds
Welcome to the swarm!
When I started out in 40k a few years back I started with Nids, and the Nid battleforce box. I found it contained a good range of basic gribblies to try out. It was pretty good value.
I soon added a hive tyrant, and my swarm grew from there.
