Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi all, Is it just me, or is everyone in the world saying that venom cannons are not as effective in 5th edition as they were in 4th edition. I just brought the rule book 4 days ago () and the only think that I found is diffrent is that tanks can tank shock and ram. Please (if this is true), could someone tell me why, why, why my favorite gun has got worse.
thanks for any reply's, HFR
i think its because glancing hits can't destroy vehicles anymore.
The only thing they reliably did in 4th edition was prevent large annoying high armor vehicles from shooting at you. If you got lucky, they killed something. I miss that, but they still effectively silence tanks, so you just need to make sure your army has something to deal with them eventually.
In the case of Leman Russes, for instance, you just make sure you've got a winged tyrant or advance your mc's, keep them from lobbing battlecannons at you and eventually knock 'em out with that beautiful new rear armor in CC rule.
The only place it really hurts us is with Monoliths and Land Raiders, since they are 14 armor all around, are difficult to keep from shooting even when shaken, and we aren't super effective against them in close combat for various armor in the rear reasons.

I have a rules question actualy. Can a glancing hit be modified to nothing or is crew shaken the lowest it can go? (if you roll a one or a two)

so what you are saying is that venom cannons are still the best GUN we have, but even better is to have a CC fex or tyrant.
No. You do not need a CC fex or Tyrant to gank a tank. A S9 carnifex charging a vehicle, esp. if you give him bioplasma as a back-up by default (s10 always hits on 4+), is perfectly acceptable with his 3 attacks on the charge.
Just as I've always recommended, CC fexes and Tyrants are utter fail compared to shooty versions, other than fluff. A winged tyrant with warp field, 2 twin-linked devourers and bio-plasma will wreck infantry, and can run around popping those stunned and shaken tanks your fexes have been silencing with little issue accomplishing the task (4 attacks on charge of vehicle that are 6+2d6 armor pen ... melta bombs .... and a bio-plas s7 hit). Additionally, with the new cover rules making it pretty easy to use a mixed force to give fexes cover in the wide open, advance your force across the board the full 6" per turn while shooting, and near the end of the game those same Fexes can shoot a tank and charge it also.
It's not good to have CC fexes still b/c they're too low an initiative. It's not good to have CC tyrants b/c you're wasting our best anti-infantry firepower in the game when you don't give them 2 twin-linked devouers.
This min-max approach is still valid, but Venom Cannons can't one-shot vehicles anymore. *shrug* they could have nerfed us in worse ways ... and as much as I wish they'd just made Venom Cannons AP-, oh well.
AP- woulda fixed the problems by allowing them to pen but subtracting 1 from the charts when they pen, and 3 from the charts when they glance. A 6 on a pen still kills, and on glances they can't even immobilize to balance it.

For KILLING heavy armour yes, but you only need to kill it as an aside, if its not shooting or running over your swarm then you dont need to kill them, so keep them stunned and if you really want them dead then slamming into them with a non CC big gribbly will do the job well enough.
