So in the Apoc book, it says that Flyers get the benefits of moving fast, which was penetrating hits are downgraded to glancing in 4th. Now it means that they get a 4+ cover save. They also have Titan holo fields, which is a 4+ save. In the Apoc book it says to roll the holo-field saves after taking a hit, while the cover save comes into effect after the hit has been determined to be glancing or penetrating. So with my interpretation, you get two 4+ saves, one taken after the vehicle is hit, and the other after it is determined to penetrate or glance.
How do you guys interpret this?
as far as i know, you can only ever take one save. i could be wrong, but thats what i understood it to be. now, this rule might change that in this specific example, but, i still think you only get one save.
No you are right, you can only every get one save per instance. However, these seem to be two separate instances at which you take a test; before working out penetration, and then after.
I read it again, and a possible third interpretation is that all hits are still technically downgraded to glancing, because that's what it says in the Apoc book about the benefits of flyers moving fast. That would eliminate the problem of the two saves.
To follow on the logic from your first point, this would now mean that all flyers are effectively equiped with Eldar holofields (even if they are not eldar) and Eldar flyers have just got worse. I can't see that as being an intentional rule change, but un-gratious opponents could read it that way.
The GW boys need to get a lot better at dishing out FAQs for this sort of thing.
yeah, tell me about it. i wish they would do more to update everything when new rules come out. i need to check to see if there is a faq for my 'cron army. please, third ed codex? i think they need an update before the marines need another update. maybe some new models as well. that would be nice. being able to use more than 8 units total. lol. prolly more like 12, but still, come on. and as to this particular subject is, could it be a possible "feel no pain" type situation? i know its not the same, but that rule kind of comes to mind when reading this. however, you still would need to take both saves at the same time, it seems to me anyways. also, here is another thought. it could be that, you have to take either or. a benefit from moving fast is that you now get a cover save to help you out, because, if someone is firing at a fast moving target in the air, it is very likely that the object in question will pass through clouds or some other such obscuration. so, this is a blanket rule, given to every flyer. however, with your flyer in particular, it already had a 4+ save, and this was before the new rules came out, i assume. in the 4th ed, it would benefit you doubly. the shot would already be downgraded to glancing, and then you would get your chance for a holo-field save. now that the rules have changed, they need to update your flyers particular rules, like daziel said, they need to put out a faq for this situation. so, in the end, it is still my opinion that you only get to utilize one of the saves. choose between them. if any advantage is given by one over the other, use that one instead.
After further thought, the fact that you already need a 6 to hit a flyer (unless AA mount) already takes into account that it's moving very fast - hence would it be fair to say that this applies as well as a cover save for moving fast?
Personally I am going to say that cover saves (for moving fast) do not affect flyers - And if any of you guys play at my house that's the rules!
