Hey guys, im looking to run nidzilla, i have one dakka flyrant and one footsloggerrant, i was thinking about the viability of making a Sniperant, the better BS would help alot and with gaurds and warp field he can stand in the open and snipe vehicles and them nasty characters without getting mauled.
What do you guys think?
I think it is almost a obligatory thing to have a sniperfex in a list, especialy in a 1500 and over. It is the only real thing (apart form a close combat fex) that can hurt tanks.
EDIT: oh,you mean snipertyrant?.... I think it is a good idea, expecialy with a retinue

First off you can only have a max of 2 Tyrants (with no other HQ choices) and they're our best unit, by far. Second, I just don't think the lower S of tyrants (compared to 'fexes) with the BS and VC is as good as the sniperfex. Sure, they'll hurt some troops and elites, but they won't get penetrating hits a lot on veh's (if any... you could have a max of S8 for a VC on a tyrant, right?). If you're just looking to kill infantry types, nothing is better than a dakkatyrant. 'Nids will never disallow armor saves, so the more shots you can throw at a unit, the better. That's how we kill things. I understand that the range is halved with devourers, but come on... 12 S5 shots, reroll to-hit and wounds!!! Just throw on a warp field for the tyrant and he should survive.
So my advice:
-If you're only looking to kill groups of units and/or infantry types, dakkatyrant all the way. Heck, throw some wings on one of them (why only one, btw?) and watch your opponent cry.
-If you're looking to take out hard targets (avatars, vehicles, MCs, etc.), I'd suggest a melee tyrant. Give him 2x ST and you're looking at 6 S6 attacks on a charge. If you're taking out vehicles, it's brutal. I had a flying CC tyrant with warp field and warp blast and all he did was fly from vehicle to vehicle. Warp Blast then charge it in assault if he didn't kill it. Assaulting always destroyed vehicles. Made him shift his entire force around to compensate for this one brutal attacker, oppening up flanking moves for me. It was a blast.

LOL!! I never thought of doing this. Question: Can the Tyrant use Warp Blast AND one other ranged weapon? Because it is used instead of a ranged weapon. A ranged weapon.I had a flying CC tyrant with warp field and warp blast and all he did was fly from vehicle to vehicle. Warp Blast then charge it in assault if he didn't kill it. Assaulting always destroyed vehicles. Made him shift his entire force around to compensate for this one brutal attacker, oppening up flanking moves for me. It was a blast.
I wouldn't bother with Venom Cannons or Barbed Stranglers with the Tyrant, the limited number is a flaw!! (as opposed to the 6 Carnifexes you can run) I'd only take the heavy ranged walking Tyrant with Guard and Warp Field as a literal walking tank. The unit would be ludicrously hard to kill and a pain the butt for anyone foolish enough to attack in close combat (e.g. give the Guard lash whips. Khorne will hate you for it).

"Tyrant has the synapse creature and The Horror psychic powers, and may choose one of the following...."
In the end you have to decide if you want your expensive flyrant to have more protection with the warp field (my personal preference), or added tank busting power with the warp blast.
Well, since my flyrant has huge wings and he spells death for whatever he gets into contact with, it tends to get shot to death with every heavy weapon on the board, so I go with warp field and try to hug cover with it.
I field a snipertyrant regularly, and he works very well in every game. With Toxin Sacs you have 8 str on the venom cannon, which is enough to glance any vehicle on the game, and penetrate if they are open topped. Now that glancing can't kill a vehicle it has lost a bit of effectivity, but it still prevents most vehicles it targets from shooting, and has enough range to do it from turn 1.
The barbed strangler couples well with it because of the long range, although I find myself hoping it to scatter onto infantry units most often Due to the high volume of attacks of the tyrant it does decently against infantry too (never as well as the dakka tyrant, though), and with the extra wounds of tyrant guards, most of my opponents simply don't bother to try to kill it anymore (he's too tough for them!)
Also, he's not pushover in melee, since 3/4 I5, S6 attacks that deny armour saves are nothing to sneeze at, and with the rending support of the tyrant guard, it becomes very deadly.
I ahve run sniper tyrants for a long time unfortunatly with 5 edition rules theya re now all worthless. the trick was to score multiple glancing hits and for that the s8 VC and s10 VC was of similar effectivity (the fex being better). With the current rules I would totally go for the good old dakkatyrant but a cc version of it may be an even better option as its the only viable way of catching up to armor that you need to kill.
