Just wonderign how many people use raveners? They seem pretty good on paper wit all of the rending claw attacks they pump out but are VERY fragile. Are they worth taking in a take on all comers tourney list?
I don't use them. Even though they move quickly, they are a very inviting target. Your best bet is to use mutated warriors with Claws and Talons. You can have larger broods, they give you synapse. You lose one attack but gain another strength. If you like the (9"/9" you could always make the warriors leaping or winged. I have not tried them, but like you said they are very fragile. It is all a big risk. If you give them enough better targets, they might get to combat and tear things up. If not, you just lost quite a few points. I would say don't use them in smaller games obviously. Try proxying them with friends before you buy them. If you are satisfied with their performance, go for it. The models are awesome looking.

I use them alot but you have to be carefull with them as they are fragile, but with scything talons and rending claws they are quite powerfull if they get into CC
One unit of 6 raveners together weith the Red Terror charged at an unit of 16 orks boys and wiped them totally out.
Jusr remember they are fragile if you don't use them right.
not to mention, not sure if this is rumor or fact, but GW is making new genestealers, raveners, and one other tyranid model, lictors or thropes i believe. The only altercations of the genestealers, which i love, is that their heads look more gauntlike and their arms look longer and poseable. Ill see if i can get pics. Anyways, just proxy the raveners and wait for the new models unless u must have them.
Yup I use raveners in my Nids army. I used them to support my assault and they're also good on difficult terrain situation. I equipped them with Scything talons and Rending claws. If you want support in cc then put some in your army. They're useful
Raveners are fun and the models are cool.
Their only negative is the relative expensiveness combined with their fragility.
That's why I also prefer the ScyTal + RenClw combo, since in CC they can't be shot at, while still being capable of inflicting casualties (even easier than by shooting).
As far as tactics go, I use them as oversized, fast 'Stealers... They wait until the Gaunts get into CC, and then move closer to support any broods in need of a helping talon. They can also be used as fast objective/quarter/etc-takers.
Usually best to field in as small broods as possible, since their fragility against Bolters and the like means that a brood of 2-3 will be almost as easily wiped out as a brood of 1, while fielding them in broods of 1 will force the opponent to shoot at them with different units if they want to get rid of them. And even a single Ravener can contest quarters, claim objectives and the like... Of course, this only if You don't have any other FA choices.
I've heard rumours of something called "Fire Superiority" in 4thEd, which basically is that if enough hits/wounds (sorry, don't remember which) are inflicted by shooting, the opponent must remove one of their special/heavy/character models as casualties. Essentially, the special models wouldn't be the last ones to be taken out.
If the rumour is true, Raveners armed with Devourers could be useful after all... We shall see.
"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
I also use them, they're great, in my opinion, alot like what Uzi said, like faster, oversized Genestealers. They are a bit on the fragile side, but then again, what doesn't a Heavy Bolter mow down in our list?

Wait, you mean that optimism isn't fashionable anymore?!
Lord of Smart-ass Youthimizzles.
Soup's up, bitches!
Cool. I guess I will hang on to mine after all.
One more question. What about zoanthropes? I dont tink that they will be to useful because of BS 3 and by the time they get in range, my leaping gaunts/winged monsters are pretty much in charge range.
I love my zoanthropes. They are excellent sm and necrons killers. With 3 on table You should be able to lay 1-2 small temlates per turn. Each temlate=2 killed marines. Additionaly You can destroy vehicals as well. Zoanthropes are fragile. One lascannon shot eradicates them, but this means one shot less on Your TMC or warriors.
Green Tide will consume You all!
"One unit of 6 raveners together weith the Red Terror charged at an unit of 16 orks boys and wiped them totally out."
Well duh, thats just like saying that my 12 Genestealers totaly wiped out a squad of 5 Space Marines in one turn.(No pwn intended)
The only thing that makes me like Raveners, is how they look. But the drawbacks are enough to make me not use them. Although it would be cool to have a Red Terror with a couple of his buddies.
