Welcome to Librarium Online!
Well, I am sad to say that I have yet to play a game of 5th edition. And just as sad to say that I've never played a game under 1000 points!
So, why am I here do you ask? I'd like to ask for some army templates and tactics at the 500 and 750 points level. For a few reasons: 1. I can easily make 1000, 1500 and 2000 points lists, but when it comes to 500 and 750 I fall short, I can never seem to settle for less. 2. I really don't know how much 5th has changed tactics so this makes it even harder for me to make lists.
So, can anyone recommend some 500 and 750 point army lists? I don't get to play often so I don't have to the time to keep playing games to tweak lists to my satisfaction, so instead I'll take the list that appeals to me most in this thread.
First you really need to read through the new book. Borrow it if you have to. You can't really build a playable list until you have an understanding of the new rules.
As for what to put into a lower point list. Troops are a good start. Troops are important.
For me I'd probably do something like the following:
troops: spinegaunts, many spinegaunts
elite: cheap warriors for additional synapse support.
No clue the point value as I don't feel like calculating up a new list. ;-)

If you want something cheesy that may or may not work in the new 5th edition rules try something like this.
2*3 ripper swarms
Cheap Tyrant perhaps CC
2 Dakkafex's or just two cheap fexes.
That list will actually be doable in a 500pt match but will most likely result in screams of Cheese from your opponent. Otherwise the above is a good suggestion to go with but perhaps going with some cheap synapse Thropes as an idea as well. Makes your synapse more resilient as even at 500 there will be things that will just chew up your Warriors.
Just for the record, you can't field elite fexes until 1500 points. Not that that really makes any difference.
I'll go ahead and second the 'thropes. They're resilient, and the AP 3 blast is great anti-infantry. The big bug list is ridiculously powerful, just realize that during objective-based missions you'll have to kill all enemy units to win. Personally I don't like to run it. If I ever decided to, I would throw in a group of gaunts just so I could capture something.
The odds of you filling up the heavy attack slots in a small point game is non-existant, so being unable to field the dakka-fexes as elites is kinda moot.
That's true but the first poster marked it as elite, so the clarification makes sense.
Also, as a note the monster list, while insanely cheesey and nuts, cannot win 2/3 of the missions. It has zero scoring units in it.
That said, my suggestion (without pricing it out) is a list something like this for 500 points:
HQ: Dakka warriors, hide them behind your troops
Elites: Another group of the dakka warriors
Troops: call it 20 odd spine gaunts just keep adding them until you fill your points value.
Heavy support: a naked sniper fex.
Staging this list up is fairly simple, up to 1k points, just keep taking spine gaunts, and for every 40 you take, bring an extra 4 warriors. So for 41-80 gaunts 2-3 groups of warriors etc.
You might consider throwing a unit of stealers in there, but the ability to drop 60 gaunts on the table in a 750 point match, with firepower to back them up is just priceless.
~2k of genestealery goodness
~1750points of terminator goodness

more witty remarks to come.
My last tournament was in 4th ed. but I'd use this list just with all the gaunts and possibly warriors in larger squads to minimise KP's:
1 cheap flying CC tyrant (dakka is better, but I just bought my model so I wanted to use it and all its forge worlds goodness)
3 dakka warriors
3 dakka warriors
8 flesh borers
9 flesh borers
it was a little light on synapse and this was something I had to keep under control
This has a lot of troops, is fun to play because you get your carpet of gaunts as well as a lot of shooting firepower. Makes you really quite deadly as the enemy has no idea what to shoot, and with cover saves being so much better now it should make you more powerful I'd say.
It also is not as cheesie and was a lot of fun to play, plus, kind of fluffy... sorta...
Dear Game Developer,Caps-Lock, its like cruise-control for AWESOMENESS!
