Hey everybody, I'm wondering what people think about changing boys from burna and loota squads into meks. Do you usually field the mek with a KMB, field squads consisting of several mekboys, or ignore them entirely?
I ask because I just picked up my first box o lootas/burnas and I'm in the process of assembling. I know its generally a bad idea to put multiple types of weapons in shooty-type squads, but is the KMB worth the AP2 and the risk of melting in squads that dish out enough fire-power as they already are (in the case of lootas at least)? That said, KMBs being obviously good at killing low save things like terminators and characters, does anyone have a particular alternative to making enough noise at a squad until they die out of pity (see also: eventually fail their saves)? Maybe I'm just afraid to field a KMB with something I know I won't make the Gets Hot! save against.
BS2 keeps KMB meks out of loota squads. If anything, I'll take big shootas for extra shots and a degree of mobility.
In burna mobs, I'll take a mek or two so they can fix the wagon ==My== burnas travel in.

Actually, I don't mind 2-3 kmbs in my loota squads. It can be a life saver if terminators deep strike in, and if they aren't useful in the given situation, then just make them the first casualties the group takes. It's up to you though, as it does cut down on the loota shots early on in the game.
Now with burnas, I'd definitely use 2-3 kmbs, as it allows the group to hunt tanks, and shoot during turns you're not in burna range. Also, more importantly, if the vehicle they're inside is damaged (always put burnas in a transport), then the burnas can repair it from the inside. Just like the lootas, they aren't really a burden either, because when the burnas take casualties, you just make the meks the first ones you take.
Meks add versatility, and more importantly, they allow you to field larger units than normal, if you don't have enough burnas or lootas to make the units as large as they should be (9-10 at least, and 13 is better).

Biggest reason I hate fielding meks with KMB's in my burna unit is that you have to roll to hit. But, meks in the transport with burnas are just to valuable to pass up. My solution? Run a Big Mek with a KFF and a burna with the normal burnas. You get all the mekky goodness and another burna. Sure, the KMB's are great for killing tanks and termies, but with how crappy ork shooting is, I hesitate at that option.
