Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm new to warhammer, and decided I wanted to play a 40k Ork army. I loved the fluff behind them, and they seem rather versatile compared to their perceived style. I bought a lot off of a friend for $50, which is the following.
3rd Edition Codex: Orks
5 Partially Built Warbikes
1 Warboss with Attack Squig
1 Partially Built Wartrak
2 Metal Burna Boys
14 Partial/ Built Slugga Boys
4 Shoota Boys
Parts for two Metal Nobs
1 Metal Lord of the Rings Lurtz
1 Converted Ork with Big Shoota
2 Warhammer Black Orcs
1 Warhammer Goblin with Standard
6 Warhammer Goblins
1 Warhammer River Troll with Club
1 Warbike on Sprue
Parts for 8 Ork Boyz
Ork Bitz & Decals
Chaos Space Marine Bitz & Decals
I have $60 (I already purchased the new codex) left on my budget for right now, my question is what should I buy, how should I assemble my army list, and how can I convert the warhammer models to be compatible with 40k?
Thanks for any advice
If you don't already have the rulebook, I'd recommend picking the Assault on Black Reach. It comes with the rules, templates, dice, and a fair number of Orks. Also, if you know any marine players or can trade in marines for more Orks, see if you can pick up 2.
2 Black Reaches would give you
36 slugga boyz
4 big shootas
6 Deff Koptaz
That would give you a good sized army, probably in the area of 1000 points, easily more. You can convert the big shootas and shootas into Lootas for some really nifty firepower (take the boy and give him a ridiculous custom weapon made from bits of other guns).
You can convert the Black Orcs into regular boyz and I'd recommend getting 2 units of 30 sluggas with powerklaw nobs. That's 58 sluggas and 2 Nobs with powerklaws (easy enough to convert from blades or pieces of sprue). 9 Lootas would be a good start. Goblins can be converted into Grotz, but you don't seem to have enough at the moment. The Nobs can all be fielded together (as a Troops choice no less if you take a Boss), they just need a Painboy, Waagh! Banner and some powerklaws which are all convertable. If you're feeling adventurous you can try converting the Warbikes into Biker Nobs (put the Black Reach nobs on the Bikes, add the necessary bits and have a go) which are amazingly amazing. You could even scratchbuild Killa Kans from old paint pots or random cyclinders or make Trukks from old toy cars or random bits you find.
The sky's really the limit when it comes to Orks and conversions.
You'll need 3 main elements In my opinion, that every good ork army should have.
1: Pick a good leader unit, Warbosses and bigmeks are the most common, remember that if you choose a warboss, no matter if hes wearing eavy armor, mega rmour, or on a biker, ALWAYS give him a Power Klaw and a Bosspole. If you choose a Big mek there are really only 2 ways to go, Shock Attack Gun, and the Kustom Force Field. The KFF is what i use, its more realiable and is a good chocie to march along with your foot troops, if ride in your host of Trukks. The Shock Attack Gun is shakey, sometimes it pulls a major upset, sometimes it blows up your own troops, in Tornments i'd go with the KFF.
2: Heavy hitting unit: Always take either a Nob Squad(bikers or in a trukk) or a MAN squad(mega armored nobs). For a Beginner i'd say normal nobs just as if used improperly the MANz might not seem as useful, but when used right they can be dead killy, earning back twice their points or more. When kitting out your Nob squad though, remember to ALWAYS get a Mad Dok, ALWAYS give them Cybork Bodies, and always at least 1 Power Klaw, Preferably 2 if its a larger squad. Don't bother giving thema ll PowerKlaws because then its just a huge Points sink. Also the Nobs/MANz are a good unit to be lead by your warboss, but remember to have your warboss equip a Bosspole, especially if hes leading the MANz.
3: BOYZ!!!: what makes us so damn dangerous is not only do we get basic troopers capable of beating enemy Elites in CC, but we can field a ton of them! Unless your going Speed Freaks and you make every Boy/Nob Squad you take go in a trukk, Make sure to stock up on Boyz. 500 point game? bring 1 Leader, and the Rest Boyz!! 750-1000 point game? at LEAST 3 units of boyz numbering 25-30. every time you go up in points, lets say another 500 points into your army, i'd say try to spend 200-300 of it in More boyz. Another thing to remember is How to Kit your Boy Mobz. there is Basic rule really, ALWAYS take a Nob and ALWAYS give him a PowerKlaw and BossPole, weither or not you give him armor is optional but 29 boyz and 1 Nob with a Powerklaw CAN and probibly will take down ANY single enemy unit in the game. You'll have to face something tough to get taken down.
For any Informaton on other units just browse the forums a bit we got alota posts on other units(burnas/lootas/fast attacks/Heavy Support). and if you can't find a post on one feel free to post any questions about a unit(but i recomend trying to find it first)
Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to buy the Assault on Black Reach Set, then try to trade the marines for some more Orks. Another question, how could I convert what i have into a Big Mek? And can I make any use for Lurtz (was thinking of taking off the shield arm, and adding a slugga for another boy) or the Troll?
These guys covered what you should do pretty well... Assault on Black Reach is a fantastic deal - don't pass it up.
As far as creating a Big Mek - go to Games Workshop's site and look at the different Big Meks there, also check out the Painting/Project forum here to get some ideas. I guess it all depends on the bits you currently have.
I purchased my Big Mek with Shock Attack Gun... i started to convert one, but it became too painful (mentally) to finish.
I did however, convert an Ork Nob into a Big Mek with KFF using some random bits, a q-tip, and some sprue.
Any sort of techy bits can be used to make a Big Mek. Wrenches, spanners, random gubbinz (those Chaos bits will help a lot I suspect).
You don't see many Trolls in a 40k army, though I suppose you can use it to make some sort of mutant Weirdboy or Nob.
I'm not sure how big Lurtz is, but most LotR minis are fairly weedy. An impressive Slugga or Kommando maybe.
===ME=== is right on teh big mek bitz, however if your gonna use some Lotr models maybe some green stuff? idk the orks there look kinda humanish to me. The Troll could make a big warboss if converted, but i'm not the guy to ask there, visit the Modeling section of the forums for inspiration, thats where i go =)
If you want some inspiration... look for any conversions done by someone on these forums by the name of "Ein" ... his conversion work will blow your mind.
I have checked out Ein's work, it is stunning, I love the warboss made from the troll. Well, I purchased the Assault on Black Reach today, and traded the Space Marines for $30. So, now i have $30 to spend, any ideas on what to spend it on?
I now have
Btw, for the troll, I decided I'm just going to keep it in my bitz bin until I figure out a good idea. I will prolly eventually make him a Nob, once I get the right bitz.
Thanks for all the Replies
