Hey, I decided to make the Tau my first army in Warhammer 40k. Now where do I start as far as buying things? Battleforce? If so, what additional units (HQ and otherwise) do I need to purchase? How many points will that put me at? Thanks.
24-36 firewarriors is a good start, plus about 20 kroot. And a pair of suits (to serve as hq. This gives you a solid core of infantry and your hq), but that's probably a long term goal.
So, the Battle force is a pretty good deal, it gives you a 1:1 ratio of fish to FW's (which is what you'll want in your army most likely), the kroot are dead useful and the suit is cool and mandatory. Stealths and drones are a bonus. I would suggest a pair of these boxes, it gives an extremely solid core, and to round it off either hammerheads or broadsides depending on your list.
Points? it depends, i'll figure it out later because tv bekons
Do you own the Tau Codex? Sometimes folks come and ask questions like "What should I buy, because I fancy using Tau?", but haven't actually read through the codex yet! The reason I ask is because there are several ways of playing a Tau army - Mobile Tau, Mech Tau, Static gunline, Hybrid (a bit of everything), Armoured Co Tau, Farsight Enclave - so it helps to have an idea in your mind as to what way you plan to play the army before launching into purchases.
Having said that, there are units which are obligatory, and a Battleforce would indeed be a good way to start, since you will get your 1+ Fire Warriors, the 1+ Commander XV8 and a second Troops choice in the guise of Kroot. After this purchase though, it is important for you to make your decision as to the style of play you intend to use. This is the time to read through your codex several times to get the hang of how things "work" in a Tau list. You should also read through the threads on this site which deal with the differing styles of play to help you make your decisions. Doing both of these things before you buy anything more will probably save you a stack of money, since you will hopefully only buy stuff you *need* for your army rather than buying stuff you'll perhaps never use.
Once you've had a few games with the Battleforce models, the Tau Megaforce is also a good option to build yourself up with several different units. You can take sections of this boxed set at a time, increasing the points value of your army gradually and giving yourself a chance to get to know your army units steadily, instead of diving in at the deep end with too many things to try to learn at one go.
Hope this was of help to you.

Cool thanks for the advice. Yeah, I have the Codex and from what I can see the static gunline is the most appealing to me so I guess for now all I need is the battleforce and a Battlesuit commander. Then maybe an additional box of fire warriors
I'd say, for Static Tau, you should have at least a couple of squads of Kroot to keep any potential chargers off your battleline or, at least distract them for you to concentrate on other elements of your opponent's army.
Remember, once an enemy hits your battleline, it'll be a complete pain to dislodge them as Tau are no good in an assault. I usually use Kroot for my Mech. Tau as there's usually one of those times where at least one of your squads are threatened with an assault.
Other than that, eiglepulper seems to have the rest of it covered. There's loads of information about Tau on this and other forums, take the time if you want to see how the Tau and 40k in general works, as that would save you some of your hard-earned cash
Hope this helps
