    Eldar for Dummies

    Howdy panzees, ==Me== here

==My== brother and I are starting up a gaming club at our school and we figured we would showcase 40k and send other poor souls down the path of damnation. To do this we intend to paint up combat patrols of various armies for people to look at, play with, and generally get a feel for the army in question.

After rummaging through the collection, we have Eldar, Marines, Chaos Marines, Daemons, Tyranids, and Orks. As I play Marines, Orks, and Daemons already I've got a good handle on what to include to show off those armies. ==My== brother plays bugs so he's got them covered. So that leaves Eldar and spiky marines.

So, I ask you Eldar players, how would you go about putting together a combat patrol (400 points, 1 Troop required, no more than 2 wounds per model, no 2+ saves, no vehicles with Ft+Sd+R AV higher than 33, no ordnance) that would best exemplify what makes Eldar Eldar?

Here's what I had in mind.
Dire Avengers-10, Exarch w/ dual shuricats, Bladestorm, Defend
    Guardians-10, scatter laser
Scorpions-6, Exarch w/ claw, infiltrate skill

It's got flexibility, specialized aspects, and shows off the speed and uniqueness of each unit. What would you use?

Also, bear in mind this is geared towards new players so an uber competitive list is not necessary and if it can be made cheaply that's all the better.

    Thanks for any input

War Walkers!!! Theyre awesome in combat patrol. What I would take:

    Avengers
    Spiders
    War Walkers

Fire Power, Aspects and speed. It's why I started Eldar. I would go into more detail but im short on time.

Oh, I forgot about War Walkers, those look awesome.

I currently only have the Guardians, which is why I was so keen on including them, but since DAs and WWs are plastic I could definitely pick some up. And Spiders are ==My== 2nd favorite aspect after Scorpions, plus they have a very unique mechanic.

Would the battleforce be a good way to cut costs? I only see 5 DAs and I don't need more guardians (I intend to expand it into an Iyanden army at one point), but is it a good deal?

The best way possible to show off what eldar to new players... hmmm... I remember what hoooked me into eldar a few years back was their special rules, speed, and unique technology. You don't need a SUPER LIST just a little taste of what the race really is. Warwalkers are awesome but perhapse a viper would show off the eldar speed better and still get to try those fun guns.
No need to bring out the complicated aspects just yet, guardians will show off the eldar's fun special rules just fine. Be sure to add in a warlock for these guys just for more fun specialness. Storm guardians (a bit underused in my opinion) may really show off a brutal side to the eldar so consider these as well.
Another thing that may really hook alot of people would be the rangers. Add in a small batch of these just for flavor and you'll have em hook line and sinker! If you still have points left over why not try some support weapon batteries? A good D cannon to rip your opponent to shreds sending his lower half into the warp and what not could add some much needed graphic detail.
I hope you can get more people for your gaming group and maybe even an eldar player or 2

    =EDIT=
A quick whip stitch list for ya

    TROOPS 240 pts
    Guardians 10
    Shuriken Cannon
    Warlock
    destructor

    Pathfinders 5

    HEAVY SUPPORT 50 pts
    Support battery D-cannon

    FAST ATTACK 105 pts
    Viper
    Scatterlaser
    Holo-fields
    Spirit Stones

    395 pts

This will give them a taste of most of the eldar and you can easily swap out the pathfinders for a small combat squad if you want.

I definately want to get the Eldar speed theme across, but I think aspects are one of the most interesting parts of the fluff and army I just can't bear to be without at least one squad.

How would DAs, Rangers, and a WW/Vyper look? I'd got the unique Aspect part, the sneaky tricksy rangers, and the graceful/speedy WW/Vyper. All we're missing is psychic powers, but I probably couldn't fit one in.

To keep it basic, but show the point of Eldar I would make a list with a a squad of Avengers, scorpions and warwalkers.

To me the warwalkers have never really seemed like an eldar unit... they seem entirely too clunky and really they don't look or act like anything else in the eldar army. I can see the tactical advantages to them but I don't think that they embody the eldar spirit very well. In my previous list I would recommend replacing one of the troop squads with either scorpions or avengers, you could even drop the D cannon in favor of the exarch and his powers.

Realistically, you CAN NOT get the eldar theme across in 400 points, there's just too much to cover. I think the most important things to show are:

    1) psykers, this is a big part of the eldar fluff

    2) speed, we are the second fastes race on the table, bested only by our dark cousins

    3) technology, we shoot spinning knives could anything be cooler?

    4) aspects, yes they play a huge part in our background but they are specialists and expensive for it. They will sink so many points that they will loose out on many of the other fun parts of eldar.

If you want to show ALL of eldar, consider doing craftworld lists. This way you can have a biel-tan list to show off the specialists, an alaitoc list to show the sneaky side, and a saim hann list to show speed above all else. Even in large games we can't get everything without paying dearly for it on the field I just gave you a list that showed the most for what we had to work with.

I'd suggest a waveserpent with DA but they are slightly too heavy. That basically discounts all eldar tanks.

what about some guardian bikers and vipers? That will show case our speed. War Walkers show off our firepower.

Ahh Dekendo I would say that you couldnt run Guardian and Ranger Heavy, especially with a mix like that. Imagine, while your sitting watching Ork Nobz, Genestealers, Bloodletters and all sort rip you a new one, the most powerful model in your army is a Warlock. Q.Q

I would say at least one aspect is necessary, just so the new eldar can have a "power unit" (comparitavely).

If you know what I mean?

I think Avengers, scorps, Vyper and a warlock. with combat patrol you can take some liberties with the rules so you should be able to use a Warlock as your HQ unit as long as you don't go around "enhancing" Scorps and what not.

Trick out the Vyper with Shuricannon and EML and you've got a bit of anti tank for anything that might show up (and they will most races have something that will qualify) and you've got some good anti-infantry too.

I also understand that it's better to have more wounds than wargear in combat patrol, so I would take it easy on squad upgrades such as bladestorm and defend as it is possible you'll never get to use them and an extra man in the squad could be more useful
