New to orks.... Have a question on this deal.

Someone bought 6 of the AoBR starters and only wants the space marines and is offering to sell the orcs for $165.

    x6 warbosses
x120 boys / with slugga and choppas
    x32 nobz
    x18 new orc deffcoptas
    x3 warhammer 40 k mini rules book
x3 box sets worth of templates
x3 box sets worth of dice
x3 assualt on black reach campaign book
    x6 measuring sticks

Would this be a decent price for an orc army. Considering the extra books and templates could be sold off. Would also like to know if any of the stuff would also be worthless in these number. I had considering starting because of the cheap price but didnt think I would find someone who would be willing to buy 6 for the space marines.

wow...6??????? I really don't think its worth it though, i mean 120 boyz is nice, but 6 warbosses? If your good at conversions that's fine, but cmon! and 32 nobz? Once again, not really gonna use that many. the deff kopta;s are fine though. and all that other stuff, you really don't need more then one copy of. I wouldnt buy it...though i might buy half of it for half the price.

Well the stuff with multiple copies that I wouldnt use I figured I could just sell off. The reason I been considering Orks is the conversion potential. I kinda looked at it and selling all the templates and extra rulebooks, Would leave the total price at about $115. Then any of the other things that could not be used would only further lower the price. The big thing is the boyz from this box set would cost about $90 if bought seperate.

So the boyz and the copptas. How many nobz would be useful to keep for 2000ish points.

    Nobs

Most of the time when I've fielded nobs I field only a single unit of them because they soak up a lot of points. Really, you could field all of the nobs if you really wanted to, and you'd end up with some tough, extremely expensive squads... but units of regular boyz are generally better because for the cost of one nob you end up with 3 boyz. A solid single unit of footsloggin Nobs has often been one of my most valuable squads... but more than that is probably going to be spread too thin or too easily blown away.

I love the deffkoptas, and that many slugga boyz is a great thing to have, but I think 6 AOBR boxes is too many because after the 2nd warboss and 10 nobs the cost-effectiveness of the whole bundle isn't as good. Also, if you wan't to use everything those 6 boxes gives you, you won't be able to use 4 of the warbosses and 3 of the deffkoptas in a standard list. The contents of 6 boxes will get you some solid units, but I don't think its got what you'd need for a nice balanced, or at least fun to play list. Of course, if you do conversions etc, the box gives you quite a bit to work with.

Well I got the whole thing for $150. I looked up what the rulebook is going for with a template set. I will be keeping one rulebook and template as I like the green templates. It looks like the rulebook+templates is $15 so I could sell 2 giving me $30 and 3 defcoptas is $20. That brings the total down to $100 paid which I think is very reasonable. I am not too familiar with the new codex. I have skimmed through it, I will be buying it shortly.

Couldnt the extra warbosses be used as nob with PK for the boyz squads. With some converting of course I think I could make use of all the contents and after selling the stuff I couldn't possibly use would only be out $100 and could easily come up with a pretty decent list for 2000 points. I'm all about thrifty and only reason I got this with the converting potential. I guess I would have better ideas for the uses of the all the models if I had read through the codex more or had it on me. I looked around for awhile and it looked like buying this many boyz alone would cost about $90 so after all the stuff I resell I am only $10 more and I get the defcoptas and nobs and bosses the rulebook and template set.

    30 Boyz w/nob(warboss) pk
    30 Boyz w/nob(warboss) pk
    30 Boyz w/nob(warboss) pk
    30 Boyz w/nob(warboss) pk

for a hundred bucks, its a steal.
The orks are slugga boyz. Unfortunately there is no option to make them shoota or otherwise- just sluggas and choppas. If you have the bitz, you could theoretically convert them, but you'd have to start hacking limbs off to do so. Also, in each box two of the 20 boys have big shootas. With 120 boyz on the field, thats a really solid start for an army, but I'm a fan of having a variety of unit types in a single list. Still, only being out 100 bucks for that many models is still a steal.

The warboss model is much larger than a regular boy and bigger than a nob as well- to the point that I'm not sure if you could get the warboss model to fit on a smaller base. I suppose You could certainly do some converting to make it work though- but youre probably better of converting the nobs that come with the set to have PKs.

If you want to collect a large Ork army that you will add to over time, yes this could be a great deal after you sell off a few of the more redundant pieces and spend more money to flesh out the collection. If you want to walk away with a playable army without spending any more than the initial purchase tho, this is not the deal for you.

Thanks for the quick feedback. So looks like the PK from the 4 bosses could probably be cut off and added to 4 nobs. I am sure there will be much potential with all the spare bodies. Yeh I don't even know where to start. Guess once I get a better idea of what I want to do then I can. I have a pretty good bits store I buy from, so I may even go that route.

Do you think the extra nobs could be converted somewhat decently to fill other rolls, like lootas

I very much intend to add to this army. Just wanted to see what I could pull off with conversions with this as a start. I want to do some very orky vehicle conversions.

So would running 15 deffcopptas be good? This is what I could run straight out of the box with a few swaps of the extra bosses. This would leave me 28 nobs and 4 bosses without claws-which 1 I think I could make into a Big Mek with KFF. I could do something with the nobs to make some lootas I think as well. It seems as is could make a decent footslogging army with the koptas for some anti tank back up. So if all goes to plan could have 2000 points of orks for $100, which includes me keeping a set of templates(green ones are mighty neat) and a rulebook with a few minor conversions. On top of whatever other neat things I can muster up.

    HQ:
    Warboss
    Power Klaw
    85

    Big Mek
    KFF
    85

    Elite:
    Lootasx15
    225

    Fast Attack:

    Deffkopta x5
    Rokkit Launcha
    225

    Deffkopta x5

    Rokkit Launcha

    Troops:
    Ork Boyzx30
    3 big shootas
    Nob w/power claw/boss pole
    235

    Troops:
    Ork Boyzx30
    3 bit shootas
    Nob w/power claw/boss pole

For specifics about the army list build see the list in the army list section. This just for reference to what I plan to build with the 6 box sets of orcs.

That is indeed a great deal. The boyz alone are well worth it, having Nobs, Bosses, and Koptaz is icing on the cake.

Keep one boss and try to convert another into a Mek (kustom force field) and convert up some powerklaws (pieces of sprue, random pointy things) for the Nobs. If you have some spare weaponry lying around, you can also convert the big shootas (12 of them) into Lootas. Basic boyz, even the AoBR ones, can be converted into lots of different things. Stormboyz and Kommandoz would be the easiest.

The list you have looks solid, though I think all those Deff Koptaz are a bit much.

For 2000 points, you could run something like this:

Boss w/ powerklaw, cybork body, 'eavy armor, attack squig, bosspole
    Big Mek w/ KFF
12 Lootas (converted from AoBR shootas)
15 Kommandoz w/ 2 burnas and Snikrot (converted from AoBR sluggas and a single Nob)
3-4 units of 30 boyz with a powerklaw, bosspole Nob
8+ Nobs with a couple powerklaws (4:1 or 3:1 normal to PK is a good mix), cybork bodies, 'eavy armo, and a painboy (An AoBR Nob with a big needle or something similar)
Deff Koptaz until the cows come home (see if you can convert a couple to have big shootas by simply cutting off the tips of the rokkits and adding dakka bits)

I converted my nobs into kommandos and snikkrot and am in the process of converting the big shootas into lootas.

I think its a great deal - go for it. You'll spend more money than that just buying a decent carrying case.
