Here with a problem. I'm torn between 5 different armies and can't decide which one to choose. I put a post up in the 40k forum but it doesn't have much of a reply. One of the 5 armies I'm torn between is Orks, and what I would like the lovely people of the Ork forum to do is convince me why it is them I should go for
well, i shall give it a try!
first, the style of play!: you can play orks in many different ways! you can field whole mobs of killa kans supported by mek's or go for an infantry charge with about 150+ models in a 1500 points list, you can field whole armada's of warbikes, (you can field them as troops if you have wazdakka, giving you a maximum bike amount of 104 bikes)
or charge with buggies and lots of trukks! or even go shooty! DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA!!!
so with orks you can play each way you imagine.
to play with orks brings us to the second, humour! nothing is as funny as a big mek doing an unvolunteered charge cause of a malfunctioning Shok attack gun!
or a bunch of orks tossed in all directions cause of a trukk breaking apart!
or maybe even turn that nasty enemy daemon prince into a squig with ork magic!
(don't underastimate the squig though, they can be nasty)
either way, you can have lots of simple minded fun with orks!
True, I've always had a soft spot for Orks. I just love the crude barbarity of them.
These are the other armies im considering, so you can brag and say what you can do better, and whatnot:
Thanks for the reply, keep em coming
I'm just starting orks, so I'll say what has attracted me to them.
First - they are just hilarious to play and read about. Other armies have good fluff too, I'm sure, but they are hilarious. If you an eyeball a Codex, read page 51 (Big Gunz) and you'll see what I mean.
Second - they are competitive now. Their troops (Boyz) are both cheap and effective. Sure, they have horrid BS, but 60 shots that hit 1/3 of the time is still pretty dangerous. Not to mention disgusting amount of dice in CC you get for about 200ish points.
Third, relating to the Secon - Its FUN to roll two cupfuls of dice into your black reach box! Oddly satisfying to say "I score 50 hits"
Fourth - With Black Reach, they are relatively cheap to start despite being a horde army. A few boxes of black reach will get you some excellent looking models for cheap. The marines in there aren't half bad either - either for to keep or trade. Heck, you can probably convert that Dread in there for your own foul orky needs.
Fifth - Conversion - there is a lot of legal options for conversion if that's your thing. For some armies, what you see is EXACTLY what you get, a bolter is a bolter, etc. There is a LOT more leeway with orks due to their scavenging a looting ways. Extra bits from other armies always have a home somewhere in an ork army.
There are some drawbacks to consider. There are a LOT of models in pretty much any ork army, so its either a lot of work, or a really fun project depending on how you feel toward painting. This army also has some problems against AR 14 rear armor vehicles. If you face tons of land raiders, you may want something else. There really isnt any great armor to speak about, so if you're into vehicle combat, this isn't a strength of the orks. Its not a glaring weakness either, as battlewagons are decent and flexible.
Overall, I'm enjoying putting together my Orks a great deal - the models are amazing looking. If this fits your playstyle, give em a whirl!
Well, I admit I have a soft spot for da green gitz! Its fun because the units are very un uniformed so easy to personallize them! They have lots of interesting vehicles, and the ork kustomization abilities are great to make a unique army that stands out from the crowd! Not to mention the humour they have gives them a great ability to enlighten a serious battle with some comic relief, and the fluff behind them is both well written and funny!
First of all: do you have a sense of humor? If you do orks are for you, period. In a overtly grim and dark 41st millenium its nice to be the one bastion of humor. Just read the codex like everyone else has said and you'll see what I mean. Tuska the Daemon Killa, the burnas, deffcopta, and stormboyz entries are all hilarious, as well as the quote about space travel.
2nd: Do you like close combat? Do you like 4 attacks on the charge per slugga boy? And the fact you can have 30 of them in a single mob...
3rd: Do you like converting? Do you have a lot of random bitz lying around from various different armies? "Orkifying" anything from a Rhino to scratch building a loota is one of the most fun parts of the army. Even if you are sub par at this sort of thing- no matter! The wierder and stupider looking the better. Its Orks, no one will question it half the time. The fact that you can stratch build a lot of our stuff (or use Fantasy models in some cases) actually makes the army slightly cheaper (especially when you factor in Black Reach.)
4th: go on say it... WAAAGH! you know you want too... Do it!... Ok good. If you enjoyed that, then your an Ork player.
Now start collectin', git, there's a WAAAGH! on.
