I just saw the statline for obliterators, and they scare me. They seem underpriced for what they are... how effective are they and how do you deal with them? Also, how do 'nids in general deal with an iron warriors army with a big load of obliterators and heavy support?
swamp em. They are bound to fail a save or two when they have that many gaunts in CC with them. Warp Blast also instant kills them, along with VC(on hive tyrants or carnifexes, though they still get the save). A carnifex in cc w/ 1 set of scything talons against a squad of 3 should kill 1 a turn, but then is faced with 4 power fist attacks back, so thats not to good an option.
I would just say warp blasts and LOTS of gaunts, because with 4 heavy support choices and a lot of oblits, you can outnumber him like mad.
Remember, Obliterator Toughness has a typo...
See the Chaos FAQ, it's quite early on in the list of typographical errors in the beginning of the FAQ. The FAQs are in PDF format, and are of course found at Chapter Approved.
"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
From a chaos players view point( i play agianst nids alot) if you are gonna swamp em with gaunts, bring something heavy to draw fire. Rember the Oblits can switch types of weapons, three of these things switching to flamers or heavy bolters will eat the gaunts up. Bring something big with em, or it can be a bad day for the nids. Just an example the other night i had one chosen terminator, w/HFL take down 15 gaunts by himself, in cc(i moved him up, flamed em and took down like 6 gaunts. then it just went down hill for him). Sometimes the rolls are in your favor.
so swamp em(statistics are statistics) but bring support, otherwise its just a kill fest.
thought an opposing view point would help.
You wont get close eough to leaping gaunts to flame them. with 6" move, FOC, then 12" charge move, good luck getting that 7" flame template in there with your slow and purposeful obliterators.
I always love people who say i can't do something that i have already done.
Did you read my example, that was from a game I played Wed night. I did it, and have done it many other times.
it is 8 inches also(for the flame template), not 7, but regardless it aint luck its tactics that gets these weapons in range.
And i have been able to get quite a few flame weapons into range of nids. Don't forget that oblits can deep strike. But they were talkin about swarming Oblits that are already on the board. If you play em right there are ways to keep em out of range until you can get that flamer in range. But oh yeah, you can also, like i said before, switch to heavy bolters and still chew threw the gaunts as they come at you. good range lots of rolls and no save roll for the gaunts. Wont be to many left to hit those oblits.
Bring something to support the gaunts charge, or get ready for lots of dead gaunts.
Lots of heavy bolter shots .You wont get close eough to leaping gaunts to flame them. with 6" move, FOC, then 12" charge move, good luck getting that 7" flame template in there with your slow and purposeful obliterators.
"And whoever wants to be a creator in good and evil, must first be an annihilator and break values. Thus the highest evil belongs to the greatest goodness: but this is--being creative."

I just thought of a way to swarm them... of course, I'm a moron and I've never been battletested
Deepstriking genestealers in their big, ugly demon faces with a seeding swarm. Alternatively, you could infiltrate the genestealers. Or, you could get a few gargoyles in their faces real fast, then bring on a swarm. Of course, I was thinking a carnifex or two ought to be able to take out a good number of obliterators too...
Anything with rending claws, or monstrous creatures will kick them in. Also, with the knew rules, you can put loadsa monstrous creatures infront of your gaunts and they'll have to make leadership tests to shoot your less resilient troops.
The only difference between tattooed people and non-tattooed people is that tattooed people are awesome and can kick your ass.
"War does not determine who is right - only who is left."
but if the mostorous creatures are in front of the gaunts why would you shoot the gaunts..... you would use the oblits on the big boys.
but yeah if you can get some gene stealers on em, that would do the trick. but they are slow(compared to other nid units) and vulnerable to range weapons.
