Welcome to Librarium Online!
As i am almost done with my fantasy warriors of chaos army, I'm looking into playing 40k again. The army that caught most of my attention were the tyranids, I'm not the biggest fan of the fluff, but i absolutely LOVE the models. My only concerns were gaunts. If i played i would most likely have a spinegaunt horde with carnifexs/tyrants.
Are you able to convert hormogaunts into spinegaunts? If not, where do all of you get your spinegaunts because i know you all arent paying 30$ for 8 of them then throwing out your hormogaunts.
Thanks in advance!
Yes you can....and I would say that the hormagaunt body looks much better with the spinefists than with the regular gaunt body...
I actually had the same problem...I started playing 'Nids at the end of 4 edition when Hormies were still good and made a bunch of them. When 5th came out I ended up pulling all of the arms off and attaching the spinefists.
That way you can make 8 spine gaunts and 8 Termagaunts per box. Or I suppose you could buy some more spinefists from a bitz dealer and make 16 per box.
It also seems like since gaunt hordes have lost a lot of their effectiveness due to the change in CC resolution I feel like the 80 gaunts I have is too many now.....I would say dont buy too many gaunts till you get a good idea how many is actually enough....
Thanks a ton annoch, that helped a lot. I just had one more question though. What is the difference between termagaunts and spinegaunts? Is it just a different type of gun? or completely different arms overall?
The arms are pretty different overall. There is a small point difference but I personally prefer Termagaunts over Spinegaunts. The Termagaunts are overall more efficient for their point cost and have a higher strength rating on their weapon. Not gonna go into too much detail here because it's against forum policy but suffice it to say that I think the small point increase to Termagaunts is worth it, especially against MEQ's.
Good luck with your future battles and remember to fight for the Hive!
P.S. for a better idea on gaunts check out the new tactica http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...-part-1-a.html
You are correct sir. A termagaunt is one who carries a fleshborer and a spinegaunt carries a spinefist(s). You may also hear about devilgaunts or deathgaunts, they carry devourers.
I cant see any reason to take the devourers...they are just too expensive for gaunts...thats what dakkafexes are for (Fex + 2 TL Devourers+ Enhansed senses....yummy).
Anyway.....spinegaunts are a great horde/screen gaunt, but dont expect them to kill anything. They are only strength three and even with twin linked they dont do much. For one point more you can get a fleshborer which at strength 4 and a reroll to wound actually makes a good marine killer.
Of course, once you are within fleshborer range those marines (necron warriors, etc) are in double tap range and unless you have a good cover save they are dead anyway... but hey they did their job for the hive mind.
In 5th editon you really need gaunts to caputure objectives, but they arent good for much else sadly....except giving kill points to the enemy.
I guess thats the trade off for no partials on templates......
Thanks anoch. Yea i never really expected a 5 point unit to do much besides harrass and just get in the way. Besides shooting something with a carnifex looks like a lot more fun!
