Welcome to Librarium Online!
I heard someone say in 5th we have less to fear with them, yes they still seem like they would rip apart most fex's and such.
I don't think there are any specific 5th edition rules that would affect the Nids in regards to force weaponry. Force weapons cause instant death unless the unit is immune to instant death so as long as you have good synapse coverage, it doesn't matter if they are attacking your carnifex or warrior- they just lose a wound the same way they do against power weapons.
Greetings fellow 40K minds
That's a good assumption there redbeef, however where there is a will there is a way, and if you happen to not have any Synapse (WTF) than there is an alternative. If you have a Zoanthrope or Hive Tyrant that has the Catalyst power, you would bestow it upon the unit or Monstrous Creature who is in combat against a force weapon, so they can still take out the model with it, even if they are dead. Of course lots of Synapse Creatures is the way to go, but this is a cheaper option (by 5 points) and could be spent better on some reinforced chitin. If you have a Hive Tyrant with a Bonesword, you won't need to worry about it at all. In fact, he would already be immune to Instant Death, as he IS Synapse. And he could protect your other Carnifexes as well.
Light a fire for a man, and he will be warm for a night. Light a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.
regardless most opponents will be gunning for synapse critters anyway. If you run out of synapse on a specific part of the board well so be it. Good news is that only typhus can reliably kill fexes with force weapons anyway. Catalyst really is for nidzilla lists but I would never take it as I would much rather have psycic scream for sweeping advances.
Seeing as I have yet to get a 5th edition rulebook (working on it), it's nice to know that this little annoyance was finally cleared up though. Instakilling TMC's with force weapons was cheap as all hell and the source of no end of arguments in our shop back home and I'm glad to hear that GW finally fixed the wording.
Forceweapons you need to fear is dedicated 1k sons players running alot basic 1k sons with BoCs or warptiming sorcerers in the basic squads. then you have a problem. They ahve the guns and the clout to keep standing an awful lot of rounds vs fexes and them force weapons are accidents waiting to happen when your tyrants are dead.
Thats nice to now though. I lost my trygon to a stupid force weapon last time I was playing, I'll just keep him closer to some synapse (because I don't believe he is).
Just be careful, not all force weapons work the same. A Grey Knight Grandmaster with his s6 force weapon will still kill you outright (and with that high strength he has a pretty good chance) despite the fact that you are immune to instant death.
However doing that actually leaves your fex open to taking more saves because of no-retreat wounds. I don't think this would be such a great idea these days as it is probably the only way the TS's are gooing to hurt you (currently they have a 1/6 (1/3rd with warp time) chance of wounding you with their 1 attack. Not somehting that they should be relying on.
just keep synapse.
to the OP. force weapons have changed from 4th - 5th they now only inflict instant death as opposed to removing all wounds. Much better for us.
