I was thinking today after looking at the codex and for the exact same price a looted wagon is exactly the same as a trukk but for 3 very important differences..
1) it can take a skorcha for the price of a marine, how ever slightly expensive, would be a great weapon to use seconds before an assault.
2) it can take the 'ard case upgrade, which of course removes its ability to assault after disembarking, but for shoota squads or gits this is perfect.
3) av11 instead of 10.
But I heard you can only get one looted wagon per army? Can anyone clarify this? I haven't been able to find it in the codex, I remember it in 3rd edition, but that was 3rd.
well you are quite right about only being allowed one in 3rd edition. There doesn't seem to be a limit now in the new codex so im guessing you can just take 3.
Now for looted wagons vs trukks
looted wagons are stronger then trukks and have more options but they also suffer from the don't press that rule. generally if you are going to use a looted wagon you should probably take a boom gun as they are very helpful. The negative of taking a boom-gun is that you don't get a transport capacity.
Trukks are REALLY REALLY good. basically move them miximum distance every turn until you get up to the enemies (note that you can move 18 inches instead of 12 due to the trukk being fast) basically you only get hit on 6s (helpful when fighting witchhunter exorcists) and even if your trukk is destroyed the ramshcakle special rule will mostlikly save most of your troops (Nob squad with pk's ftw).
SO in my opinion take trukks for your transport needs and looted wagons for boom-guns.
Hope that helps
Really? Trukks move 18? I had no idea haha! that could of actually saved me last game.
and the save for being that fast, is that just against shooting, or is the melee only?
Thanks for the help!
Trukks are a lot better, for many reasons. Trukks are fast, so they can move 18 inches (you still can only move 12in if you want to embark or disembark though). They don't suffer from the 'don't press dat' rule, which is crippling for transports. They're slightly cheaper (they get the big shoota for free). They can be taken as a dedicated transport, so they don't use up a heavy slot. If a trukk explodes, there's a 1 in 3 chance that the occupants won't take any damage, and even if they do, they only take a strength 3 hit each instead of strength 4.
Honestly, they're just better. The only advantage a looted wagon has is that its front and side armor is slightly higher, but either vehicle is probably screwed unless you keep them obscured behind cover, or other vehicles. Always use trukks when you can and always give them a ram. This enables you to move through terrain with virtually no risk, keeping the trukks obscured until you're ready to strike.
On a side note, just so you don't get the impression that they're useless, looted wagons with boomguns are better than battlewagons with killkannons. The boomguns are stronger, have better range, and are cheaper to boot. That's the only circumstance I'd use looted wagons though. For transports, I'd always use either trukks or battlewagons.
As grax said, Trukks are a lot better than Looted Wagons for transporting units. Looted Wagons work best either as cheap ordnance or carrying units like Burnas/Tankbustas if you don't have any Trukks or Battlewagons to spare.
I run ==My== Burnas in a skorcha wagon and while it may not be the most competitive choice it's freakin' hilarious when they get to open up on some unfortunate unit and BBQ them. I've managed to roast entire 30 gaunt broods, uvver boyz and even Terminators.

With 5th edition, burna boyz aren't really 'competitive' anymore. They're fantastic anti-infantry, but so are boyz and nobz, and the boyz and nobz can claim objectives and include powerklaws, bosspoles and dedicated transports as well.
That said, burnas are a lot of fun, simply because there's virtually nothing they can't kill (besides vehicles). I honestly can't think of anything else in the game that can stand up to both 10 flamer templates and 30 power weapon attacks hitting with ST/WS 4. Granted, you can't do both in the same turn, but either one of those choices will kill or cripple virtually anything in the game.
To get this back on topic, transports are a necessity when using burnas (they'll never survive long enough to get within range otherwise). However, I'd use a battlewagon instead of a looted wagon when transporting them. A looted wagon has a fairly good chance of blowing up, and that'd probably kill about half the unit. A battlewagon is far less likely to explode. Of course, this makes them expensive, so it's up to you.
