Backstory: My local comic shop is running a special - buy one box, get a second of equal or lesser value at 50% off. Seeing as I've been toying with the idea of starting a WAAAGH! for a while, if for no greater reason than to wet my hands in some fun kustomizin, the logical choice is splitting two Assault on Black Reach boxes with a friend. $398 worth of Orks for $45.. I may be doing this with another friend too.. if his XO's ever give him that 30 day leave they've been talking about.
Long story short, I'm startin' a WAAGH! and I need some direction. Assuming I do buy all four AoBR boxes I will have:
12 Deff Koptas
Plus I am going to be trying my hand at woodworking and make
2 Deff Dreads (extra DCCW)
and 9 Killa Kans (with pin on weapons, 6 Kustom Mega Blastas and 6 Grotblastas)
My next few investments will be 2 Big Meks, 1 or 2 Painboyz for da Nobz, and 15 Assault Marine Jetpacks to make kustom stormboyz (with magnet strips so I can decide if I want 15 boyz or 15 stormboyz)
My general strategy, I think, is to horde. Either with lots of boys, or lots of Grotblasta templates.
I won't have much moneys left after all of this, so I'd like some guidance before I make anymore investments. Whats next, any suggestions?

That definitely sounds like a plan to me! Assault on Black Reach is a fantastic deal, and it gives you all the orcs you need to start your army.
Most of my advice is generally in the way of modelling:
Use spare parts (even random pieces of sprue) to give all the nobz in the groups of boyz a powerklaw. Also, I wouldn't bother buying a big mek. I'd just use some spare pieces and turn the warbosses into big meks with kustom force fields. The KFF is a must for horde armies. Warbosses are generally only used in speed freaks, when using units of nobz. For horde, you're best off with big meks with KFFs, and I'd just glue a bunch of orky stuff to the back of one of the warbosses from the blackreach set. He doesn't need a powerklaw though, so you could switch that out with an 'axe' hand from one of the nobz.
Deffkoptas are best used in groups of 5, and you should always outflank with them. I prefer big shootas over the more expensive rokkits, but that will take a little remodelling.
I'm not a huge fan of stormboyz in horde armies. They move far faster than the rest of the army, so generally they tend to run out in front and get obliterated long before the rest of the army arrives. You're better off with a unit of trukkboyz, which could also claim objectives.
Instead of stormboyz, you might want to consider converting some of the boyz or nobz into kommandos. Either that or you could get a couple packs of loota/burnas, and do what I did: use the burna parts and a few extra boyz to make more lootas! I'm not a fan of the burna boyz, but the burna parts aren't that hard to convert into lootas, getting you 8 lootas and a mek out of each set.
If cost is a concern, I wouldn't start Killa Kans just yet. They cost an arm and a leg. You can get plastic dreads fairly cheap though. Personally, I made all my killa kans out of plastic barrels from terrain sets, and spare parts. They're on the small side, but a lot cheaper.
One of the best things about the orks is that it's really easy to convert and make things just out of spare parts, and not only is this a lot cheaper than buying them new, but they look a lot more unique as well! In any case, good luck!
Well.. balls.. I just talked to my Army friend who was going to split the second set of boxes with me. Thats a definite no go. I might have to purchase the second set of boxes all on my lonesome, which will reduce my army startin budget by a whole $45. Well.. that WAS the rest of my budget for now xD
At any rate, thanks for the advice. I was thinking about attaching all sorts of pointy bits and wotsits on my Nobz and Warboss to give them cybork bodies, but I didn't consider kustomizin power claws on all of them. I suppose the drop in initiative really wouldn't matter since they'd only be on par with Space Marines the turn they assault. Likewise, I didn't consider kustomizin a few Big Meks either. Great idea
So far as the Killa Kans and Deff Dreads are concerned. They should cost me about $15 in total. Why? Oh, right. I just bout a bunch of Dremel bits (the $15 part) and my barn is falling down, so I've got plenty spare wood
I WAS considering purchasing two boxes of burnas/lootas, but that might not happen if I can't go halfsies on two of the AoBR boxes (which might not be such a bad idea.. plastic termies + nobz). Still.. do they have enough bits to feasibly assemble both lootas and burnas?
I like the idea of a squad of burna boys. My main opponent plays Nids oh too often. I figure a squad hanging out in the back of the line pounding down drinks all battle long could be a worth while investment. If the buggy gits eat up my choppa boys I can just cook em before they get the chance to assault into my next squad.
Other than that, I've found a fantasticly ugly dump truck toy at Wal-Mart. With a hammer and screw gun I should be able to make it pass as Orky. Use up a few of those extra space marine rocket launchers my friend has, chop up a few slugga boys, and toss in a few sprew bits and I'm thinking I've got a trukk full of boom.
The ideas just never end.. I'm afraid I might turn into da most sadistic pain boy of dem all an' by da time I'm done all my choppa boyz will be kustomized. Worse yet, the rest of my armies might start getting chopped up and made into Orky bitz too. These Orks are so addicting and I don't even have any yet!
grax puts forth excellent points as usual, he's da Blood Axiest of everyone here.
4 AoBRs, even 2 AoBRs are fantastic starting points. As grax said, a little bits-box-raiding and earn you some kunverted klaws, armor, and random fiddly bits. The beauty of Orks is the conversion possibilities. You can easily get away with just buying Boyz and converting them into every specialist troop and making vehicles yourself.

Almost makes me wonder why I've never started Orks before Ah, probably to collect bunches of toys for my soon to be Ork army ^-^
Wooden killa kans and dreads?! That's quite possibly the greatest idea I've ever heard! Go for it!
All your conversion/customization ideas sound great! You might not be able to play the toy truck at some tournaments though. The general rule is it's okay to use anything you made yourself out of base materials, and it's alright to build on top of toys, as long as no part of the original toy is visible (many people place styrene sheets, cardboard or even popsicle stics over the toys to cover them completely). Of course, if you're just playing with friends, then you can use whatever you want.
In order to make both lootas and burnas from the same set, you need four additional bases, leg bits, and torso bits. There's more than enough heads, arms and bodies though. Most people buy 1 box of boyz and 2 boxes of lootas/burnas, and then use the legs/torsos/bases from the box of boyz set to make burnas, or more lootas out of the burna parts.
Burna boyz are fun, but you need a looted wagon or battlewagon for them, or else they're never going to be able to get close enough to the nids to roast them. The nids will just run, fleet and assault them long before the burnas get into range. The vehicle makes roasting them possible.
The killa kans are probably the first thing I'll be making. I've been drawing up specs for them the last few days, though I'm afraid my Dremel skills might be lacking. All that spinny makes it rough for a steady hand.. but I'll be able to figure it out. I'll hopefully be posting pics within the next week or two.
I've got way too many ideas not to be working on this right now >.< Buuuut I have to wait until Mike can make good on his $45 for the other half of the boxes.
Hmm.. 10 burna boyz, a battle wagon, and a mek walk into a bar. Can models fire from open topped vehicles even if enemy models are in close combat with said vehicle? If so dem bug boys is invited to da Moo Kowz first annual barbecue. Main course Gaunt Au Jas with a happy helping of Kaptin Rogbogger's Fungabong Beer.
Any idea how to put some 'eavy armour on my boyz? I'd like to avoid greenstuffing them, but if thats the general strategy then I guess I'll have to.
I need to stop thinking of ideas. I'm going to need a new closet soon.. plus some sleep would be nice.
Tads for the advice and info
One of the conversions that I did with my Ork army was to steal the Power Klaws off of the extra Warbosses. The Klaws look great on a Nob(There's one on my Evil Sunz army thread) and it's an easy way to get extra Power Klaws without buying Ork Boyz boxes. (You always need more Klaws. )
Vehicles that aren't walkers, and have no WS value, cannot be 'locked' in close combat. After the assault, enemy models all have to back an inch away from it, unless it was destroyed. The following turn, it can move freely and models inside are free to fire away as they please.
Just be careful. Many Tyranid units are very good at dicing up vehicles, so it's best if you sneak up on them. A ram or deffrolla helps.
I'm not a fan of 'eavy armor, except on bosses. I always give it to warbosses and I usually give it to the meks. It's not a bad investment for nobz, but I wouldn't give it to regular boyz, and nobz in groups are better off with cybork bodies.
Good idea, but I'm saving those power klaws for the Meganobz konvershun I'm planning, using AoBR Ork boyz and SM Termies. I also just found an old thread which suggests using choppa blades as the fingers of a power klaw, which I should have extras of (18 extra maybe? assuming I end up purchasing a box or two of burnas/lootas)
Likewise, I've seen kustom kombi scorchas, but what about kombi rokkits? (I'm in school right now, so I don't have access to my Codex.. but that is the other kombi upgrade, correct?)
