however, you after calculations, you won't do enough damage when striking first, to justify the point per model

striking at the same time as a sm will save you points without having to take much more casualties.

I like the 9pt gaunts most

It is awsome. My friend plays orks and we fight all the time. Our dead piles are stacked very high. And a combat between 30 leaping gaunts and 30 boyz gets very nasty.

O ya, and I prefer gaunts with just leaping and ST's and spine gaunts.

Indeed such battles get very bloody as both players have to get into cc

What about a deathgaunt? A gaunt with leaping, ST, and adrenal glands for +1 strength? It would be able to wound a marine on a +4 instead of a +5, which is pretty nice. Would it be worth the 11 points? Let's see how they'do against space marines:

12 of those suckers would cost 142 points with a hive node. They'd get 24 strength 4 attacks, 36 on the charge.

Assuming no charge, out of 24 attacks, 12 would hit, 6 would wound, 2 would kill. On a charge, it'd be 36 attacks, 18 hits, 9 wounds, 3 kills.

Compare that to leaping gaunts: 16 gaunts with a hive node is 154 points. Without a charge, against marines, they'd get 32 strength 3 attacks, 16 hits, 5.3 wounds, 1.7 kills . On a charge, they'd get 48 hits, 24 hits, 8 wounds, 2.7 kills.

Check my math to make sure, but I think that you're better off with strength 4 gaunts. Plus, I'd probably have a squad of between 16 and 20 deathgaunts, so on a charge, 20 deathgaunts would get 60 attacks, 30 hits, 15 wounds, and 5 kills. For 230 points, I'd consider that a good deal, since most SM squads are 10 models and about 200 points with upgrades.

To model them, you just stick an adrenal gland on the back of a leaping scythgaunt, right? Would I have to do all of them, or just a few per squad so my opponent gets the general idea? Please let me know if my math or just my logic is wrong.

That's not even taking into account the damage you could do witha full squad of deathgaunts. 362 points for 96 strength 4 attacks on the charge. Against space marines, that's 49 hits, 24.5 wounds, 8 kills! Against ork slugga boys, 20 kills! My philosophy is, if you hit them hard at first, you don't need to survive a sustained attack.
