new to orks & battle wagon transport question.

Im yet to decide on a new 40k army after a few years off playng fantasy. I love the new ork models especially the vehicles. Ive been browsing the codex and like the idea of using battle wagons as the main transport for the army. The only unit i can see it lists as an option is the nobs. Also i dont have the new rule book but heard you can use any vehicle as a transport as long as it has transport capacity. Could someone give me the facts please?

Any transport can carry any units that fit in. You can get Battlewagons for Heavy Support and run your boys in them.

The only exception to this is dedicated transport. You can only deploy the unit it was bought for inside at the start of the game, but afterwards it can carry any unit. So if you want to run boyz in a BW bought for Nobs they will have to embark in your movement phase as they cannot start the game inside it.

You can deploy boyz in HS wagons no problem, just remember that killkannon BWs only hold 12.

You could potentially have six battle wagons in an army.

Three can be used as dedicated transports for Nobz or Meganobz, and three can be taken as heavy support choices.

I'm not 100% certain of the rules, but I believe dedicated transports must be deployed with their unit but can then transport any other unit once its dedicated unit disembarks. Heavy support choices can carry any unit that fits.

A sample list might look like...

    HQ
    Warboss (in mega armour)
    Big Mek
    Elites
    10 Nobz (in battle wagon)
    10 Nobz (in battle wagon)
    Troops
    Mega Nobz (in battle wagon)
    20 Ork Boyz
    20 Ork Boyz
    20 Ork Boyz
    Heavy
    Battle Wagon (with Killkannon)
    Battle Wagon (with Killkannon)
    Battle Wagon (with killkannon)

Jump the nobz out of their dedicated transports and load them up into the battle wagons with killkannons, then load the 20 Ork boyz into the empty battle wagons. I don't know how feasible this army would be, as it would be slow to start, but thats certainly a lot of boom!

Someone please clarify the (dedicated) transport rules.

You've got the right idea, but the max number of BWs you can take is actually 8. 2 Troop Nobs+3 Elite Nobs+3 HS. Good times

To BossGoreStompa: I was in GW recently and they said (concerning dedicated transports) that you can basically do whatever you want with them, and that dedicated transports effectively aren't dedicated in anything other than name. That you don't need to put the dedicated unit in the transport at the beginning, and can even start non-dedicated troops in the trasnport in deployment. I'm not sure how true this is as it started a heated debate in the shop- but this was there conclusion (pls correct this if its wrong).

To austin1985: battlewagons are awesome. But there is so much AT stuff out there, and if you want troops to assault out of them they have to be open topped (unless you haven't moved the vehicle that turn) and so armour 14 gets destroyed pretty quickly when the enemy adds +1 to all their penetration rolls. If you're really into ork vehicles then a speed freaks army can be obscenely effective, and won't present BW as massive targets that cost soo many points when the majority of the army needs to be lots and lots of orks. And 30 ork boys cross the battlefield in a short amount of time with relatively few casualties when running every turn.

    hope this helps.
