Barnabas here, I just started playing and I'm about to build my first 500 pt. Ork Army, me and a friend both bought a copy of the Assault on Black Reach set and I took all the Orks (he took Marines).
Anyways, the standard army that comes with the AoBR set is as follows
1x Warboss + Powerclaw (85 pts)
5x Nobs (100pts)
3x Deffkoptas + Twin-linked Rokkit Lauchas (135 pts)
20x Ork boyz + 2 with Big Shootas (130 pts)
That should be 450 pts if I'm not mistaken
Now I need to decide if I want to alter the existing 450 pts and then if I would rather Upgrade existing units or add more (or both). Remember I have access to double the army listed above.
So far, this is what I plan on using tonight for a casual practice game.
+10 Upgrade 1 Boy to a Nob
+5 upgrade Warboss shoota to a KombiShoota-Skorcha
+10 Upgrade Warboss armor to Cybork body
+25 Upgrade all Nobz to Heavy Armor.
I'm trying to keep it fairly simple since I've played one game before this and it was a quick sample game with my friend walking us through all the rules and combat steps (Still reading the rules too)
Welcome to da Waaagh! Pull up some fungus beer and get ready for a good an' proppa scrap.
Your list of changes sounds like a solid start, later on you'll definitely want some powerklaws in your Nobs and Boyz mob. As a general rule, every squad that can have a PK should have one and with Nobs it should be a 3:1 normal Nob to powerklaw ratio (or something similar). PKs are how Orks deal with big monster, Terminators, enemy characters, and vehicles. Your boss may get squished by a Dreadnought before he gets to swing, but a Nob in a mob of Boyz cannot be picked out as easily and can smash up that tin kan with no problem.
Also, get more Boyz. 50-60 would be a good start, a mix of shootas and slugga depending on your preference. Try and score more AoBR boyz to bulk out your numbers.
I'd buff up the nobz, add in a PK or two and a combi-skorcha perhaps. This January GW is launching a plastic nob box that will defiantly bulk out your force, grab that and a few boxess of boyz and you'll be off to a good start.
Just FYI, I have 2x AoBR ork forces, so that means 40x Boyz, 10x Nobz..etc. PK's seem pretty expensive though. Would you drop some of the units from the original AoBR army setup or choose to upgrade to PK's instead of some of the other items I mentioned??
Keep in mind this is a 500 pts army for now. I think the amount may increase later. I don't know what my one friend has planned, but he's basically running some kinda Campaign style even and we start with 500 pt Armys (in Jan).
Btw, does the new Nobz set have anything special that isn't included in the AoBR set and or Anything that can't be Kustomized? I'm kinda low and funds and I would rather buy somethinz I don't already have.
QUAN'I'Y! QUAN'I'Y! QUAN'I'Y! QUAN'I'Y! QUAN'I'Y! QUAN'I'Y!
MORE BOYZ FOR DA WAAAGH!
you can never have enough boys
You will definitely want a PK Nob in every mob of Boyz, shoota or slugga, doesn't matter. They are a must have.
I would reccomend using just slugga boyz for now, since thats all you have, but as you start to upgrade towards 1000 points, add in some shoota boyz. About 50/50 should do you fine. Don't underestimate Ork dakka! When you do finally add shoota boyz, keep the big shootas out of the slugga squads. You will want to run your sluggas into assault as fast as possible, which means no shooting.
For now though, two AoBR boxes is definitely a good start. And I would strongly strongly recommend assembling and painting everything you've got now before you start buying more models.
One last note- Its been recommended to me, and so I shall recommend it to you. Kunvert your second Warboss into a Big Mek with a Kustom Force Field (I used a Tau shield drone, cut out a little mek symbol to attach to the boss pole, and used a pin vice to drill a few holes in the boss's head, back, and arms to plug in guitar strings as electric cabling)
For 500 points I'd run something like this.
Warboss w/ PK and cybork body
2 mobs of 20 Sluggas with PK Nobs
2 Deff Koptas with rokkits
That's a crap ton of Orks, plenty of PK loving and some speedy Koptas to go after vehicles or objectives.
Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it.
Just thought I would stop by for a meta-game update. I played another practice game last night and I found out what most of my friends would be playing. This is what I know so far.
2x Playing Necron
2x Playing Space Marines
1x playing Tyranid and 1 possible Dark Eldar
The Necrons and Marines are playing mostly troops (at least from what I've seen so far). There might be a tank or Dreadnought in the Marine forces.
This is an Army I'm considering
1x Warboss 60pt
+1 Attack Sprig + 15pt
+1 Power Klaw + 25pt
+ 2 Nobs
+ 1 Painboy
15x Ork Boyz + Nob Upgrade
15x Ork Boyz + Nob Upgrade
So far I have a Warboss that can do 6x attacks w. a PK and 8 Nobs that can avoid wounds at a 4+ roll...which I think is pretty good.
Also, I colored the upgrades that I think are most important in Red and left some units in Green for more or less Optional.
The total is 470, which Means I have 30 points for Upgrades and/or More units. What would you consider for the leftover upgrades
I was debating between
1. 5x Big Choppa Nob upgrades, 1x Heavy Armor for Boss
2. 5-6x Heavy Armor Upgradse
3. 1x PK for a Nob (in Boyz group) and 1x Big Choppa (for other Nob) or Heavy Armour upgrade (for Warboss)
6. 6x Boyz
Any other options you guys think would be good!

Okay, it looks like the Warboss doesn't get an extra attack for having a PK and another Single Handed weapon. I don't suppose there is anyway to give him 2x Pk's is there? Regardless, it looks like he'll only get 5x attack in close combat with his Power Squig and 1x For charging.
You're Nob squads will be lost in lower point battles. They do look really nasty, but they simply cost too much and Orks need boyz boyz boyz to win a fight. 15 boyz in a squad will probably do the trick, but will most likely fall apart too fast / be one hit wonders. I recommend trying out ==Me=='s list, and saving the Nob squads for 1k + battles
Also, just a friendly reminder. Its sort of a forum faux pas to post exact point values for upgrades. Total unit cost is fine, and total army cost is fine, but adding the points for each upgrade or model infringes GW's IP rights.
