Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have always wanted to know more about the city-state where our race resides, where diplomacy is second only to murder and deceit.
Yet, I cannot find anywhere (websites or Codex) that explains Commorragh for what it truly is. Was it originally a Craftworld that was caught in the rift of the Webway, or a planet so inhospitable the Dark Eldar saw it a fitting place to live?
And being in the Webway itself, where reality is distorted, wouldn't the world itself tend to be viewed differently by those on it and around it? As it is apparently almost impossible to find, is this because to someone it looks like a desolate city with pointed spires, while to another it appears all mechanical and shadowed; noone can fully describe it and recognise it?
What are your opinions on Commorragh?
Do you think there are other worlds the DE inhabit?
It would be really interesting to hear what you come up with, and all input is welcome.
Light a fire for a man, and he will be warm for a night. Light a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.
I think the problem with this is the same as with Tortuga. We are kinda pirates (previously pirate eldar), so our main planet is Commoragh what is the 40k alternate of Tortuga the pirates` island in the historical past. (GW always uses the history to create new ideas in the 40k universe.) In the codex the description is about the same: different kabals rule different parts of the planet/island.
So by way, there are other places where dark eldars live as there were other islands and ships constantly on their way for the next raid.
In my own kabal`s selfmade background they are from Commorragh but always on a big ship on their way for raid
I don't think that it is a planet or an island, or anything really. To me the webway is akin to a subway system without the trains and our great city just kind of grew up as people through down what they had with them and said "I live here now."
Everything I have told you, even this, is a lie.
With the slightly changed "hints" from the BRB and our codex I take it that Commarragh is a place/city that resides in the "web way" passages of the warp but is not in the warp itself. In other words, it resides in the "worm-hole" and apparently whatever is found in a worm-hole they were able to create a city. I do not think its a planet or a ship but until we get a better description I tend to think of it as they have made buildings that are somehow erected on the walls of the worm-hole itself. This kinda explains the picture in the BRB of the "Gate to Commarragh" picture.
To add a little from the now missing "Torturers Tale" apparently the web way acts as "cloak" against "she who thirsts" but not entirely, they are still drained by her hence the need to replenish their soul with that of their captives. I do not think the drain requires a 100 souls a day as Vect has mentioned but who knows, perhaps a tortured soul is worth more than an un-tortured soul (which would explain the need to torture captives as much as they do).
If you look in the new fantasy Dark Elf codex they did keep that part but changed it a little.
"On a hunch, I melted them down and inhaled the fumes and read the dark eldar codex again, AND FOUND A BUNCH OF NEW RULES HIDDEN BEHIND THE OTHER WORDS..." [Gardeth on modelling & interpreting the DE Codex]
The Webway is a "tunnel" through the warp. Commorragh was built on a particularly large and expansive portion of said tunnel. It is a massive city full of dark spires and massive temples (pleaseure temples?) Other then that, lets see what GW comes up with.
This is just my opinion here so don’t look into it too hard.
Commorragh exists between worlds, these worlds being the material universe consisting of physical matter or the materium and the psychic universe of energy or the immaterium.
This ‘between’ worlds is comprised of both and was originally designed by the Old Ones and further taught to their children, the Eldar. The world between was extremely extensive and private, and it could lead anywhere and was only accessible to those who controlled the runes of power.
But since the Fall, the webway has suffered great damage, its exclusivity has been compromised leading to many portals being sealed shut and its accessibility is now very limited due to many of the tunnels leading to hostile environments.
In one of the cankers or cul-de-sacs of the web exists a refugee city, a city that did not exist until, out of necessity, it was needed as an escape zone. Indeed, an escape zone from the thirst of the newly born God Slaaneesh.
This zone was known about pre-fall and a temple built there to honour the Gods. Asdruebal Vect was one of the architects of this hidden temple and was ideally placed to take advantage of it when the need arose.
(So it was never a Craft World at all.)
And finally we have a picture of this fabled area and it is worth a thousand words, note well the structures that radiate inward from an outer circle as opposed to radiating outward from an inner point in a conventional gravity world. This appears to state that the surface of that world is the tunnel walls themselves and anything that is grown will grow inwards to the centre of the tunnel.
The spires and outgrowths appear to be coral like, shoals of vehicles appear to swim through an underwater blue haze and their skimmer technology works equally well from any surface.
In short their appears to be a “marine” theme going on here, just view the shark like outline of the new Raider, the manta like Hellion Skyboard and the crustacean like armour of the warriors festooned with piscatorial spines.
This parallels their cousins the Dark Elves as they have a similar marine taste to them also, what with their Sea Dragon cloaks and such.
So I don’t think that Dark Eldar would want to inhabit any other world as it would be too arduous away from their shadowy and liquid environment, too exposed to the all consuming gaze of Chaos and too dangerous if found out by the Imperium.
Eldar and Dark Eldar are on the decline and any expansive thoughts are secondary to just plain old survival, and both races are just too hedonistic to consider ‘helping’ the general populace.
In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.
Question by the sinde, is the tortures tale still available, cause that is the best DE fluff source...
Didn't it say there that they maneged to get a planet inside the wabwey? If you consider, that a howle race, even though it is threatened with extinction, there will still be a lot of DE.
And the Gateway to commorragh is in my opinion not commoragh itself, cause as you can see there are buildings coming from everywher(the top, bottem, sides) so i guess it is a cylinder like opening that gets bigger and gigger until it reaches as size, that could contain a planet, so the gateway would be a kind of slimm passage, that could easyly be defendet.
But I guess, that also is just my opinion ;-)
The city of Commorragh is hidden amidst a labyrinthine tunnel where the laws of physics are always changing and a single wrong turn could find you all the way across the galaxy or inside the Warp. It doesn't really need any more defense than that. The actual shape of the city, I imagine, is as continually changing as the Webway itself. Gravitational, spatial, and temporal anomalies would be an everyday occurrence in Commorragh... if it had any days, that is.
