Welcome to Librarium Online!
Heya Tau players, I have a question for you. I play IG and have only a basic knowledge of the Tau Codex, one of the local Tau players says that his Devilfish are fast (read: can move flatout 24"). Now I always thought that they were just normal skimmers and could not do this, but I did not press the issue because I realize my knowledge of Tau is limited.
So I come to you, is it possible for the Devilfish to become a fast skimmer? Or is my opponent pulling a fast one on me for his "Greater Good"?
devilfish are not fast skimmers therefore they cannot move 24" your friend might be referring to the tau upgrade which allows devilfish or another tau vehicle to fire as if they were a fast vehicle not move as if they were one.
The devilfish is a normal skimmer, ergoe a normal tank in all respects except it must be on a flying stand and is subject to one or two more minor special rules.
The tau player in question would most likely have mistaken the rules for the vehicle version of the multitracker (not the battlesuit version). This allows all tau vehicles to FIRE as IF they were a fast vehicle, but without gaining any of the other advantages and disadvantages of being fast (so we can move 12" and shoot one weapon, but we can't move over 12".)
Don't be afraid to question a rule if you think its iffy, i do so regularly during tournaments where i play unfamiliar armies (necrons and DE, it turned out the necron player barely knew his own codex, and i was saved from a whole game of unphaseable 'crons, which won me the game pretty much), you can only be wrong, and there's nothing wrong with that (unless you have a tendency to chuck a hissy fit when you're wrong, then maybe its not such a good idea )

Or if playing apocalypse, there is a detachment of 3 or more DF that can be FAST if within a distance of the command tank (which must be alive and mobile).
Other than that, it isl ikely the above posters answer: Your oponent doesnt understand the context of the multitracker entry in the codex. I would honestly hope it is am istake and not a fast one being pulled.
I am almost positive it is just a mistake on his part
So if I understand this correctly, DF may only move up to 12" and if it has the upgrade can still fire like it moved at combat speed?
Multitracker also lets him move 6" and fire all weapons, as though he hadn't moved.
I fight for the Greater Good. Too bad for you it's MY Greater Good.
Snow Forces of T'olku W/L/D : 3-4-2... I like to think I'm learning, though.
Multitracker allows you to move 12" and fire one weapon plus all defensive weapons. For a Devilfish this just means the Burst Cannon in all cases. Note that the Gun Drones fire separately in addition to any weapon systems permitted to fire on the vehicle.
"Tau Commandment #226: Participants who use Velocity Trackers in the Tau Clay Pigeon Tournament will be disqualified"
burst cannons aren't defensive weapons in 5th ed. They dropped the S requirement by 1. Its on page 58 or the BRB. discovered that to my disappointment during an apocalypse game a couple of days ago
