i would like to know why you should take an avatar, and how would you field it?
if i do, i'd take it whit maybe 2 10man units of storm guardians, or a unit of scorpions.
well, an avatar is very tough to bring down, a monster in combat, has a potent shooting attack, and stops your army running away.
Stick him in a gunline to keep it from running and for needed countercharging, and he'll soak up enemy fire 'cos he's scary.
Or feild him in an assault force and your units become very dependable, and once again he will absorb fire with ease, and smash enemy units in combat.
I use him in a few different ways.
1. Behined my wraithguard as an anit-charge unit
2. to hold the line in a foot slogger list of Dire Avengrs.
3. to look pretty much awsome! (see forgeworld Avatar)

i like to use the avatar in tandem with other things. people see the avatar running at one of their tanks, and inevitably want to destroy him bad. and since his stats are somewhere near ridiculous, he will soak up MANY MANY shots per turn, and then in the end, you will be able to use your other, more squishy units more effectively. war walkers/vypers/banshees. hope this helps a little bit.

I use him for all the reasons above - but also in objective games he will stop your scoring troops from running away from the objective (if he's near enough obviously) if they would normally get broken which can be a game winner. If you keep him near the back of your line any fleeing troops will run into him and automatically regroup. Nice.
My avatar normally get's killed most games because he looks great and scary and the opposition can't resist killing him - fine by me if they want to waste a lot of shots and effort that could have been spent elsewhere more effectively - give the rest of my army scope to get up to mischief unmolested.

I have had some luck with the Avatar in 5th
Last game he killed a demon prince, a whole squad of chaos marines and a predator.
I think alot of that came down to it being an assaulty chaos list and for a change i didn't have to slowly move across the board getting las cannoned and krak missiled on the way.
I'm hoping that 5th will make him more useful with run. In terms of potential the avatar is great, it's just getting into the fray without him becoming target number one.
Bleed Black Label S.D.M.F's!!
I normally have my Avatar follow along as near to my guardian squads as possible, that lower Leadership has a tendency to get in the way,, so ,being fearless is always good. Not so good when things get into cc with them though, last thing I need is to lose a few, then lose more due to that wounds equal to points lost rule.
I mainly play 1500 point armies, and I have a farseer with guide and doom. I'm don't have a lot of troops (1 squad of guardians and a half squad of dire avengers), and my cc unit is a unit of harlies... so I'm thinking of pulling out my Avatar for 1 squad of guardian defenders with a scatter laser, and a second war walker with dual scatter lasers, as they end up being the same amount of points.
I know that you can't really tell me what's best cause I haven't thrown my list up here... but maybe you can tell me why it would, or wouldn't be a good idea.
Quick guide to my list off the top of my head
Farseer (guide and doom)
5 dire avengers (including exarch)
1 squad of guardian defenders with scatter laser and warlock
10 harlies (including troupe master with PW and shadowseer) all using kisses
5 wraithguard with warlock and waveserpent with scatter laser (planning on changing to fire dragons once I get some, I love wraithguard, but not sold on their performance per point cost, i mean i can fill out my DA squad to 10 and still have more firedragons than wraithguard)
5 shining spears including exarch and star lance
1 warwalker with dual scatter lasers
1 wraithlord with scatter laser and EML
Thanks, hopefully this doesn't sidetrack the thread
yeah, the list looks good for what you have right now. you might consider dropping down to 1000 to lose the wraithguard. make up an official list, and move it over to the "Eldar Army Lists" forum for more direct feedback.
War is my master; Death my mistress.
seems like everyone here got a good reason to fielding the avatar.
anyways, the only things i could see not to take it, when i think after all, is that if you usually meet long range fire like lascannons, he aint that usefull to points cost, if you discount the fearless guardians. since he can't run (He IS a MC) he would get shot down in about 2-4 rounds. well soaking up some fire that would have gone elsewhere, but i got wraithlords to do that.
the other thing is if you're up to deamons, mainly tzeentch and khorne deamons, since thay easily take him down, even whit 4+ inv save.
so why an avatar if you know that those pesky bloodthirsters, bloodletters, horrors and flamers are out there?
