iam cnsidering useing three units of 10 scarabs in a 2000 pt tournament has anybody tried this. What is the best size of unit
I've never tried it, though it seems kind of overdone. Especially since you can't take any Destroyers when you fill those slots with Scarab Swarms.
Maybe it would be best if you posted the entire list in the army list section, so we'd be able to see the context in which you tend to use all these Scarab Swarms.
Take 9 tomb spyders too, and the rest a lord and some warriors. That would be fun to try out.
As to your question, even though they get a little bulky to move around, I like 10 strong units. THey're pretty cheap. I think you really need all those attacks.
As of the overwhelming amount of Scarabs, you do need all those attacks. However, when you´re facing enemies of T4 and up... you´ll experience some significant difficulty in holding, let alone destroying these units. Don´t forget that Swarms can still be instantly killed and have rather insignificant saves.
In theory, you need a lot more then 30 attacks from Scarabs to destroy, for example, a squad of 15 Guardians.
You only get 45 wounds from a scarab on each Tomb Spyder
Scarabs are good but not at killing things. Scarabs are best at being destractions and you don't need 3x10 of them to do it. You're better off takeing Destroyers and maybe 1 unit of scarabs
Scarabs with D fields are armors worst enemies.
In an apoc game, I had a squad of 6 scarabs make a baneblade explode in 1 turn of combat, they didn't survive the apocalyptic explosion, but, who cares, it got the superheavy off the table.
Yes, I did deep-strike your sister...
Necrons : W-8 D-3 L-7 (Sleeping in their TombFoam, waiting for a new codex)
Chaos Forces (CSM/CD): W-42 D-19 L-28
Apocalypse Games : W-4 D-0 L-1 (4 Titans, Brass Scorp, 3 Baneblades, 2 Bombers, 3 Fighters, and a Partrage in a Pear Tree)
Anyway, I agree that one unit of Scarabs (maybe 10 if you want to keep something busy for as long as possible with Scarabs) should be sufficient. It allows you to take up some Destroyers, which are capable of destroying what's left after the Scarabs are wasted.
And Nhyx, I guess that worked out pretty well then. But when you're not sure whether you're up against (a lot of) vehicles, those D. Fields cost some serious points for a unit on a suicide mission.
FYI, if anything S6 or stronger hits those scarabs, they might be 'saving' on a T6 but they are still instakilled if you fail to save against it. You have to choose where to take those powerfist or S6+ wounds carefully...Because you could easily lose a whole scarab with 1 wound still.
