Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've acquired some Eldar models from a friend who's given up the hobby however I have not had a chance to check the new codex for how Eldar work now. The models I have are down below but from what I gather they seem a little on the thin side. He seemed to collect every special aspect unit there is, yet didn't have any guardians and only 8 dire avengers. I know Scouts/Rangers are troops but by the looks of things he doesnt even meet the minimum troops limit.
What type of army can be made with the following and how would it play? For starters is it even a legal model list?
5 Swooping hawks including Exarch
6 Fire Dragons including Exarch
5 Fire Dragons
7 Striking Scorpions including Exarch
7 Harlequins Including Shadowseer
5 Eldar Scouts
7 Warp Spiders Including Exarch
5 Shining Spears Including Exarch
3 Eldar Jetbikes, one with shurken cannon
1 Warlock on Jet bike
1 Autarch on the jetbike
2 Eldar Falcons
8 Dire Avengers with Exarch
With the introduction of 5th edition elite armies have lost most of their grit: only troops can hold objectives and without objectives there is no more winning (unless you manage to annihilate your adversary).
What you can pull out of this list is a two core troops of Avengers and Jetbikes, there to capture and hold last minute objectives (jetbikes can turboboost on the last turn while you can convert a falcon into a waveserpent to add mobility to the avengers).
Harlies with the seer and scorpions don't need transport (harlies with their veil of tears and scorps with infiltrate) and can definitively hit hard in hand to hand, augmented by the shining spears + exarch + autarch unit (lots of high strength power-weapon attacks on the charge, then hit&run and repeat!).
Dragons can fit snugly into a falcon (still a great tank, but much less useful with the new vehicle rules) and run about popping tanks with the wraithlord giving long range support with brightlance and missile launcher.
Not sure if the spiders can fit into an army too, but they would do great at poppint in and out of cover to harass your opponent.
Problem is only two tropps: if they get destroyed then either you wipe out the rest of the opposing army or you will be able to manage a draw at the best.
- Just love that maki! -
A very nice variety of stuff, but as has been said, you need more troops to put a "proper "army together. I like to run plenty of Dire Avengers but guardians are effective as well.
I also like maxed out squads so I would consider investing in the models required to take some of the squads to 10 - but fair play if you don't fancy that, depends on what your targat pts for the army is I suppose.
Also, I love spiders so defo find a space for them: Quick and nasty with scary guns and damn hard to catch, and when they do get caught, with hit and run and an exarch with powerblades and a 3+ save they don't just fall down either.

Unfortunately the army is already painted so investing in more models will upset the scheme a little as I'm not a gr8 painter. However guardians should be do-able as hopefully they can be found on Ebay in bulk with a similar colour scheme, or hell perhaps a variation in scheme is good anyway, Eldar are like that with their aspect warriors.
Theres enough Fire Dragons to make 10, but the others may have to remain as they are. Wouldn't mind a Farseer thou.
How did Falcons become worse off then? I always liked that tank before.
falcon is still a good tank but with the change in defensive weapons it can't move much if it wants to shoot all its weapons. There is no more skimmers moving fast so people can get penetrating hits on a consistent basis but with the holofields and the new damage chart it is still very hard to actually kill.
I would also like to agree with the posters above me, in 5th you need troops that can take alot of punishment or enough troops that the enemy can't kill all of them.
one troop choice that was left out was the scouts. he actually has 3 troop choices, and scouts are pretty decent in their cover. well, we call them rangers now, and they have an upgrade to pathfinders which give the model a ridiculous boost in cover save (+2 to cover. usually ending up give the pathfinders an all around 2+ because they should always be in conver anyways). these would work for the time being as a "home base" objective holder, with quite a bit of staying power. as slim as the army seems, i can see it working out quite well if the proper list is made. repost this in the army list section, and give us all a chance to throw up some ideas in an actual army list fashion. let us know what you would like to start with, 500 1000 1500. i think that any of these are doable with your list as is.
as far as the paint job, i say screw it, dude. go for the good old greyscale models, that way u don't really have to get mad if they break or have chips in the paint. i think that you will find that eldar are extremely versatile, and if you go through the army list postings you will find a vast variety of armys that are all in their own rights, equally deadly. for eldar, it usually depends most on who you will be fighting, because instead of having the all around good MEQs, we have aspect warriors who are trained in very specific areas of death, and each person likes to employ different tactics. that is the other thing that eldar bring to the table: how do you deal with a horde army, when your army is so specified. often times an orc WAAAAGH can be devastating if you have made even one tactical error, or if you simply are not getting the roles that you need to be effective (the dice gods hate us all at one point or another). so, in short, don't be afraid of messing up a paint scheme, you have a REALLY nice start to the army, and with a small amount of purchases, you could be well on your way to a fantastic army. consider starting with an eldar army box. not the battleforce, but the actual army set that is 170. msrp. i have a friend who gives GREAT deals on GW stuff, and as long as u r in the US, then shipping is managable. hit up www.gorillatactics.org for more info. after that, i would say snag a few fire prizms, and maybe a few serpents and you should be pretty good. you might want to grab another 10 pack of DAs and you will have a very nice army.
