Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've only got about a dozen or so games under my belt total, despite collecting as studying Eldar for the last 7 years. What I've noticed in the last few games as I've started using mechanized Dire Avenger squads, is that my underslung Shuriken Cannon, although good at causing wounds, isn't doing anything, since I have to turn my Wave Serpent around to allow my Dire Avengers to actually fire at their target. So my question is thus; is the underslung Shuriken Cannon even worth it in this role? The only solution I could see is raising my Wave Serpent another half inch off the ground to allow my Dire Avengers to fire under it, the problem this raises, is that this would make it a whopping 1.5" inches off the ground (3.5" from ground to top of turret) and thus almost as high as my Wraithlord, which is 4" tall. I use and EML with an underslung Shuriken Cannon for those that want to know.

I generally don't get the unslung weapons upgrade on any of the tanks I'm always looking to keep them moving and use the big gun on top. Now if you can move to the side of the unit your wanting to blade storm you can keep the tank facing forward and shoot at a different unit with them.
Side note with my banshees I drop them off and fly my wave serpent to the other side of the unit I'm assault (if possible ) that way it provides cover from the rest of the opponents army.
A favourite tactic of mine is to equip the WS with either TL Lance or EML (usually the rockets) for popping transports. I usually don't bother with the underslung weapons, because at Str 4 you can still move 12" and fire both weapons.
*Technically* you could upgrade to the shuriken cannon, and move 12 and fire it and a frag rocket (Str 4) ... but I like to have the option.
I use my Avenger serpents a bit differently. This may be a little hard to convey in just text but here I go.
I'll try putting it as a step by step:
1. wave serpent moves up the field positioning 12-18 inches away from an infantry target to one SIDE.
2. wave serpent turns to face a separate target (roughly a 90 degree turn from the infantry target) letting the avengers out to face the infantry unit at an angle
3. wave serpent fires up the side of the field with all weapons and avengers fire at the infantry unit.
It's a bit weird but it works pretty well.

I never really liked the idea of using waveserpants for Direavengers. I perfer to run them up with the Avatar and 2 squads of storm guardians, the dire avengers do some softing up on the enemy and then I overwhelm them with numbers and a Avatar. Now i found out in the last tourny i was in that my favorite way to use waveserpants is to put a squad of harlies in with a farseer(doom, fortune), that combo was complete unstoppable, and slaughtered its way though dark angels and black templar, but not so well against nurgle termies.

"I'm glad that worked. Those would have been horrible last words."
I still use my Avengers old school
Pull up, shoot under the wave serpent (So what they get a cover save... so do I!) I take the EML and shuri cannon. The reason is because I use the ST 4 splash on the EML and the cannon as my main weapon. I play a lot of MEQ so I don't care if I give away 4+ cover saves and it is mean when I get to save against their heavy bolters. Also, it is so nice when your EML causes pinning on an enemy unit, so sweet.
I personally love using them the way you are right now. In the long run if you have something you really want to spend the points on then drop the shuri cannon... but if not keep it, it comes through in a clutch.
just my two cents. Hope it helps

the way i use my wave serpent is thus:
1. 10 dire avengers inside
2. Equipped with scatter lasers and shuriken catapults (low points/high shots)
3. hold it in reserve
4. bring on later to claim objectives
5. star engines make it extremely fast
6. 30 avenger catapult shots is brilliant.
7. scatter laser good at softening units and hitting rear armor.
8. can rely on it not looking like a threat due to having scatter lasers rather than bright lances.
I run a mech list built around mounted avenger squads.Using non-standard flying bases is technically illegal for game purposes, at least competitively. That said, early FAQs indicate that models deploying from a skimmer have the common sense to crouch and fire, but the unit you fire at is granted a cover save. The only solution I could see is raising my Wave Serpent another half inch off the ground to allow my Dire Avengers to fire under it
My Dire Avengers nearly always start the game in reserve, coming in on later turns and generally fast move->second fast if necessary->deploy->bladestorm->assault->lol I just slaughtered your dewdz and took your objective on turn 5. They work amazingly with Warp Spiders and outflanking scorpions, or mounted banshees flying next to them.
