So I posted in the DE forums cause well thats who I play but now it seems my loyalty to Comarragh is being tested by the corrupting influences of my stepsons! One is Space marines, one Chaos space marines, and I have a little snotling running amok in my house!!! Well no, hes 10 so more Grot?
I ave just a few questions for youz
1. He's got... 2x AoBr and a box of lootas/burnas. There are a LOT of bits left over from making his burnas. I want to take the loota bits to the AoBr boys, but will it look decent on the snap togeather static models of the AoBr set or would I be better off buying a box of boys to convert?
2. The trukk, any suggestions for a conversion base? He dosn't like the plastic kit and he is a true ork and wants to kunvert! (well really I think he wants to play with the green stuff)
3. I have noticed orkzies is all about the bitz! Anywhere online where I can get just a grab bag of orkie goodness? Well other than e-bay..
4. What is he missing? We plan on playing 1k games amongst ourselves for the near future, any ideas for his next step and is he good for now with what hes got? And if he needs some more whats the cheapest way?
Thanks guys, I dont care what the imperials say, you are all right.
It's up to you, but buying a box of boyz would probably be 'easier' for conversion purposes, especially with lootas. Instead of 11 orks for $22, you could also get fantasy orcs and get 20 for $35 (you'll be short one torso though, but you can fake it with greenstuff). You'll need round bases though, so this only makes sense if you have spares, or you want the 'medieval' bits.
I'd definitely get at least 2 trukks, one for the burnas and one for a troops choice. This is the first time I've heard of anyone who didn't like the new trukk kit, but virtually any vehicle will do. If he wants to convert from scratch, you should look online or at your local hobby store for plasticard/styrene sheets.
Ork bits are great, but not as plentiful as some might claim. In fact, it can be downright difficult to get your hands on them, depending what you need.
If you're looking for bits to convert normal boyz into cooler looking ones, I'd consider either picking up another loota/burna set, the new nob set that's coming out (not the old metal one, the new plastic one), or a box of fantasy orcs.
If you're looking for bits to convert vehicles into cooler looking vehicles, I'd either get an Ork Trukk or Chaos Rhino. Both come with a ton of extra bits, and you can make the base vehicle too (even if you don't like the new Trukk, the pieces are nice).
If you're looking for extra guns, I'd consider picking up some Imperial Guard bits, either from a heavy weapons team kit, or in an auction on ebay (IG seems to generally have the cheapest bits, since you get so many of them).
If you're looking to make killa kans or deff dreads (I wouldn't buy either at retail price), I'd use plastic marine dreads for deff dreads, and barrels from terrain kits for the kans. Granted, these kans will be small, but given their fluff, I don't see that as a problem.

Awseome, thanks for the tips. I love how orcs can be done on the cheap! But for me half the fun is modeling them with my son so the more I can stretch that out the happier I will be. Hmmm that all works out, my CSM player needs rhinos, and ironicly the fantasy orcs at our local store are 20% off!
Fantasy Orks are a definite win.
Another idea, especially if you want to do a hobby with your son.. If you've got a scrollsaw and dremmel tool, you could design and carve your own Deff Dreads and Killa Kans. This would be some wicked awesome bonding time!
^--(This is what I plan on doing, but unfortunately I have not been able to start yet - my winter break has taken a bit of a different direction besides modeling )
If you're looking for a design, I was planning on carving out tracked units for a cubish chasis. I love the idea of Dreadnaughts on tracks, rather than legs. For the weapons, I'll be using spare bitz (I'm thinking one DCW will be the wrecking ball from my Trukk ) Just make sure you design them to scale.
If you've got any plasticard (or spare WHFB movement trays) you can also do some pretty sweet kunvershuns for vehicals. Go to Walmart or KB Toys (or whatever chains are local) and find a suitable - and prefferably ugly - toy truck, tractor, etc, then model away until it looks properly Orky.
I've found a cheapo ($3.50 USD) Bob Cat construction toy that looks PERFECT for Wartrakks.
Also, just walk around your local hardware store and brainstorm. They serve as my inspiration when it comes to Orkifying things.
Good luck, and be sure to post some pictures once you've got some stuff finished
Edit: And Grax is right about spare Ork bits. The only reason I've got extra is because I haven't made many kunvershuns yet, but trust me, they'll dissapear fast!
