Welcome to Librarium Online!
I am torn on their function - do they work or not? I used them at the GT last year and I do know it prevented a shot at a raider (he didn't want to guess) and at another time the opponent guessed wrong and failed to reach the raider. But is this worth their points? out of 5 games should be expecting more utility?
So I am asking if you use them or not and if you do use them, what do you put them on? Raiders or Ravagers?
"On a hunch, I melted them down and inhaled the fumes and read the dark eldar codex again, AND FOUND A BUNCH OF NEW RULES HIDDEN BEHIND THE OTHER WORDS..." [Gardeth on modelling & interpreting the DE Codex]
Good Question. I haven't broke into 5th edition but looking over it I've been thinking that maybe on ravagers and important raiders but not on the run of the mill gunboat squad raider, after all blaster range is too close for night shields to get much use.
Everything I have told you, even this, is a lie.
I use them on every ravager and raider. Pretty much standard equipment along with horrofexes. It is rare that I have a game where the nightshields don't prevent at least 1 or 2 squads shooting at my raiders and on several occasions now they have won me games. Once against deathwing, twice against chaos, once against codex marines, and once against a Wazzdakka bike horde. In all these games my opponents didn't have more then 1 or 2 weapons over 24" range (if any) and once those where eliminated, it was just a matter of moving around and destroying the opposing army with dark lance and distintegrator fire, these where completely one sided massacres. They aren't the normal occurence, but just to be able to keep rapid fire str 4 guns, assault cannons, and meltas from killing my boats is more then worth it!
I try to always use them on my ravagers and "important" raiders, just as was mentioned above. Though, if I'm trying to squeeze in a few points here and there, I will drop them from the raiders first then the ravagers if necessary. They dont always make an impact, but when they do work you will be thankful for them.

Gardeth, you do raise an interesting point. Are they worth taking in order to play defensively and try to take down all the long range weaponry so you get the rest of your shots without fear of repercusion?
I'm not sure and it doesn't seem very dark eldary, but it is an interesting idea
Dear Game Developer,Caps-Lock, its like cruise-control for AWESOMENESS!
Rock is cheese, Paper is just fine
WWP and other Dark Eldar how to
Seems in character to me. Dark Eldar don't like a fair fight. They like to sneak around and strike from the shadows. If they can do that with their Raiders & Ravagers, all the better! Note this strategy does not exclude getting in their face with incubi, wyches, jetbikes, etc.
For me, I take them only when I've already got enough troops along with enough firepower and protection for them from the other units. Then if I have the points I'll put them on my ravagers, but my raiders are fine relying on cover saves.
I have Night Shields on all my Ravagers, which really helps to skirt the bolter/ multimelta (which there are now a lot of in take-all-comers lists) kill range. I don't normally waste the points on Raiders because they generally get really close anyway.
No, for my Raiders I use different deception. I have a incredibly highly converted Raider that looks really beautiful and scary (it has a mast with a cruicfied fella on top), but rarely carries anyone important. My opponent always assumes that my Archon is on there and targets it first. The look on his face is very satisfying.
LOL darkspawn. That is a hilarious way to play it, very fluffy too, I might add!
No, you simply tell if he asks. Plus when they're all rushing out a Webway Portal you have even less reason to clarify without his asking.
Not dishonest, its simply not being a patsy.
