What is the optimal unit size for lootas?
Lets go massacre something

Well, I haven't played a lot of 40k, but I would guess the ideal minimum size should be 10, and depending on the pt limit of the game, I would assume you may want to have a few squads.
Of course, this is all heresay advice I've read by some of the more experienced Ork players here.
If I were you, I would just try a few different combinations of 8-15 Lootas per group and maybe 2-3 groups.
From my personal experience, I had 6 lootas in a 500pt game and they did quite well in shooting. They dealt at least 8 Fatal wounds when they got 18 shots. So just imagine getting up to 30-45 shots anywhere on the board!
I run mine with 14, and a big mek with a boss pole.
Its a nice little unit when it rolls more than a 2 to see how many shots they get.
Though its only been tested a couple of times, so theres still time for me to see the bad side of it yet.

I run my lootas at 14 or 15 depending on the points available. They tend to only get shot at the first turn, after that my opponent has more pressing things to worry about. So, I size my lootas to be able to take 3 or 4 casualties without having to take a leadership test.
Just my thoughts...
I'm surprised grax hasn't commented yet. He adores those deff skull gitz.
You want more than 10 in a squad. The point is the high rate of fire and so they'll be fearless. It sucks when you have 8 in a squad and you roll a 1 on a d3. Ork shooting is only good en masse.

I am a firm advocate of having maxed out squads for pretty much every unit in the game, except for expensive guys like mega nobs.
I WANNA GET STUCK IN WIT DA BOYZ
max size is the only way to go. harder to fit them all into cover. but its alot easier to earn their points back the longer they stick around.
Due to a loota shortage i use 12 lootas and 3 big meks with big shootas. it also ensures i will always have lots of shots.

Am I that predictable?
I used to think it was 13, no less. Than one day I met up with AKM to have a match in person. I had one unit of 13 lootas, and he had 2 units of 7. I scoffed, lightly chuckled, and then proceeded to be soundly thrashed.
I still think 7 is too small, but with Lootas, it's always better to have multiple units rather than one large unit, because one large unit gets picked on too easily and can only cover one side of the field (mine didn't survive past turn 1).
I'd say the best size is 9. If you've got more points, just field more units of 9. If you still have more points left over, or no more elite spots, I'd consider fielding big guns units, outflanking deffkoptas, or rokkit buggies. Lootas just aren't tough enough to warrant beefing up their numbers. With Ork fast/elite/heavy choices, it's always better to field 'more' units, rather than larger units, because none of them are particularly resilient.
