Hello Tau Empire!
i was wondering what you guys put in a unit of marker stealth suits what size unit you use or hey if you use em at all.
thanks for the input.
4 team members. T-Ldr upgrade with BK/TA/ML/HWTL/HWDC+2MDs. Team members get BSF (cheapest obligatory support system since TA is on the T-Ldr). Cost: 224pts, or take 3 team members and reduce cost to 191pts.
I use them quite a bit, especially now with their Relentless rule.
"Tau Commandment #226: Participants who use Velocity Trackers in the Tau Clay Pigeon Tournament will be disqualified"
I take a 6 man squad with team leader, BK, HW DC, and HW TL and one ML Drone. Taking a non HW support system is not compulsory, so taking just HW stuff is perfectly legal and avoids the rest of the list taking costly extras. This unit costs me 225pts and I suffer no detriment to the Stealths teams effectiveness (I have a full team after all). I can usually be assured of 3 or more turns with +1 to BS (which is usually enough). I also am not losing half my team immediately if the team leader is killed.
I really think you are suffering from 'all eggs in one basket' syndrome here and also you are utilising a very expensive unit to provide ML support (mobile though it is). I tried a similar set up and I simply found I missed the Stealth's fire-power and infiltrate abilities. The unit as you have it tends to be set up for long range ML support (hence usually no use for infiltrate) with the stealth field providing protection and while this is Ok in theory I found that many many lists could close the distance very fast. I would rather have a unit that does its main job well and can provide some additional help when needed. My unit is cheaper but it has more fire-power and can still provide ML support.
I can see why your team is set up the way it is though. You work on the assumption that the Drones have to fire at the same target the other Stealth's do if you use the target lock. The TA is there to ensure a better hit rate for the ML the team leader is equipped with. I personally do not hold with the assumption that the ML Drones fire at the same target the unit fires at but they fire at the same target the model with the DC does.
This is why I think this particular rules quandary needs sorting by GW because it really affects how the Marker Drone inclusive unit is set up as can be seen here by the difference in Eigle and my units set ups (by the way I am not saying Eigle is wrong or that I am correct that is for you other players to decide when and if you use this type of unit with Drones and Target lock equipped models).
Target lock question aside I still see the unit as you configure it is a very risky option. I would not be happy having all three ML's under the control of one model and having so many points invested in one model (125pts).
I would rather have a full Stealth team with full fire-power and the occasional ML hit then have three Stealth's and a TL that cannot fire its weapon if it fires the ML. I take the ML Drone to primarily help the Stealth's do their job and to offer other units help if needed (while the remaining Stealth's attack an other unit). If I lose the TL then I still have an effective unit of 5 Stealth's.
One thing I have noticed is bad for Tau under the new rules. The wound allocation rules make it quite easy to lose a team leader and the problem with that is the only model in the unit that can take a Bonding knife is the team leader (Shas'Vre if you take one instead of a TL) and as soon as it dies the BK's benefits are lost. On small XV8 teams and Stealth teams it is so easy to be wounded enough so that each model has to be given a wound and to lose the TL very quickly. Another less than optimal change for Tau.
