Welcome to Librarium Online!
Lately I've been somewhat fascinated by the concept of using Spore Mines. They seem to be quite versitile filling a solid role in Fast Attack or as part of a Heavy Support via Biovores. Now my thoughts on Biovores are rather poor as they are squishy, expensive, and fill a precious slot in Heavy Support. Of course, if any of you have had success with them I'd like to hear it!
But I was thinking how effective it would be to Deep Strike clusters of Spores on top of my enemy (for general purposes we'll say Marines, but anti-Ork tech/strat would be nice too). Bio-acid is nice and effective, though somewhat weak. But all the same the AP is tasty and it can wreck vehicles. Even if they don't splat on my enemy's heads, it still poses a "curtain" of fire to draw off from advancing troops as they ignore the drifting mines or try to drive/footslog through them.
If playing with Victory Points (or not counting scoring units) it may be a bit more viable, so I understand that in a Kill Point scenario they could almost be "freebies". So with this setup I'd like to draw on you all, the Hivemind, to share your insight, wisdom, or experience with these funny little explosive jellyfish (including Meiotic Spores).
Human beings, while exceptional in the ability to learn from the mistakes of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to...
Ah, yes i remember them, i used them when i was 1st playing, i would use them to fill in pts for the models i didn't have. not very reliable, as they DS and then float away if not hitting anything.
I do remember one time i was playing with it, it landed right ontop of a vehical. and blew it up.. i think it was the bio-acid one. but yeah, we had an argument about what side of the tank we should use for AV, a staff member said that because it came from the sky, right ontop, it hits the back armor. so it went ka-blewy, it was really funny cause it was eiter annoy some SM, or blow a tank to nothing nessity
No sig required.
The problem with using spore mines as fast attack is that they now count as kill points
Just use 2-3 Biovores and shoot them all over the field.
If they miss they still travel threw the air, and synapse creatures can blow them up with their minds. They wreck face.

I really like spore mine clusters and biovores. but it depends on the mood i'm in. i usually use them in games of 3000 points because they add something to the feel of a full scale full on tyranid invasion of a planet. having these spores drift down just adds to that whole feel for me. - not only that but they are useful in games of that scale as they are more likely to drift into a unit as there are more on the table. just think about having 30 come down by the end of a game (7 turns).
so they are great fun. but when i play smaller games i don't feel i have the points to use on them. they are risky and rely on luck completely.
i only wish that when the clusters land from deep strike, the spores don't have to be base to base with each other. and that each mine could drift independantly.
if you have enough of a tyranid force you could plan out a nice scenario consisting of 3 games playing each stage of the tyranid invasion. the first game's force would consist entirely of things like genestealers, gargoyles, lictors, spore mines etc. the second game would be a typical swarm army with plenty gaunts and carnifex and warriors. then the final game of the scenario would see loads of rippers, raveners, etc.
thats how i see spore mines being used. not so much as a tactical competitive option. just for fun.
