So ive been playing around and i find i tend to struggle when playing orks. what tends to happen is they have at least 2-3 mobs of boys 30 strong, and usualy thers a nob with a powerclaw. Theres normaly a warboss with a powerclaw too. I find i just have no way to kill these orks, when i send in the hormaguants, i kill about 15 if im lucky, then we get stuck in a long protracted combat. Usualy however a second unit engages and im detroyed. Should i send in a MC then it will kill a few, before being beaten by the powerclaw nob. shooting dosen't seem to work and the only thing ive had real succes with is genstealers. So i now have a dilema. should i drop a dakka rant which is expensive and generaly isnt great and take a broodlord with my stealers, freeing up some more points.
So in summary ive 2 questions. How do you beat the orks and which is better - broodlord or dakka rant?
Gota shoot em up as fast as you can imo. barbed strangers/venom combo ho! and run away and shoot more dont advance.
but genes do, do the trick aswell... everything else just gets mowed point for point we dont stand a chance in h2h with gaunts.
My dakka tyrant at 121 points is the least favorite unit of my Ork nemesis. Also if you are really struggling to put some wounds on them put in a squad of deathspitter warriors; I don't use them because they take too long to resolve their shooting, but against a mob of thirty you will either get lots of hits, or they will have to space their models out so far that when you assault with your stealers/hormies that they wont all get to fight. Either one works out for us; espeially if they end up charging and can only get three rows of combatants.
I am trying to get away from stealers with the new codex because they just seem overpriced when compared to other elite HH units (bloodletters, harlquin, enough boyz to fight back). Though I still am at 36 stealers.
It amuses me that when faced with Orks Tyranids best strategy instead of the usual 'Claw their faces off lads' is the more like the Imperial Guard strategy of 'Shoot 'em lads and when they get close enough then we claw their faces off( or stick 'em with bayonets)'

You could always try Nidzilla to make him cry?
I would say at this point Orks are the #1 army. I dont think that any army, in general, can easily beat them.
As for beating them....
I dont know if there is a really good way to go about it. Like Nids an ork player can bring any number of lists to the table and the same strategy doesnt work for all of them.
- Templates can be your friend. Deahtspitter warriors, Bookfexes, gunfexes can all take big chunks out of his mobs.
- If he is running a truk list its time to dust off those venom cannons, cause they are open top....
- A broodlord is not a horrible idea. If you charge orks, you will probably win. The problem is that when you wipe a unit, he almost certainly has one around to counter charge you.
- Go first. I know that this isin't in your control, but if you go first your chances of winning seem to improve dramatically.

Thx very much for your opinions all, i agree about the dakka rant idea, it does seem to do well. However i find he is a bit expensive, this is mainly because of the the fact i put 2 TG on him. So i shall try using him without the TG, buy some weapons on the warriors and hope the oponent will fire their antitank into my fex or Flyrant. If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.
All I can really say is be happy you're facing CC orks. If you ever come across the shooty kind, say "bye bye". 15x2 Lootas and a few squads of 30 shoota boyz with a PowerKlaw each will absolutely kill you no matter if you try to stay back and shoot them or advance to prevent them from shooting. I'm just glad most Ork players either got into it for the CC aspect, or simply haven't realized how amazing shooty Orks play.
The only lists that can make a dent are ones specifically designed for that opponent (which I refuse to do) including a ton of infiltrating, putting Stranglers on every MC, or overloading on Death Spitter Warriors.
actually ive played a couple of ork shooty lists and find them quite easy to deal with. I simply outflank my stealers into one unit of lootas, hit the other with a flyrant and then mop up whats left. Failing that, runing away very fast works too. However they normaly take down a huge chunk of the army in the process. Also there is a slightly dodey tactic of the 2+ cover save. but im not a big fan. I think overall orks are a very hard race for nids to deal with as they can beat us very soundly in CC and they have the range to be dangerous too. I did have an idea about sending in 6 ravenors after a squad of deathspit warriors softened them up. i figured that might work on shere number of attacks.
And, we haven't even begun to talk about the recommended 25% terrain and what 4+ cover saves do to increase the effectiveness of this Ork army...

Seriously, I think the nids need a flamer temp-like weapon in their next codex.
