Hey I have a quick question. In a small game, like 750 pts, is warp field good for a hive tyrant. Its very expensive points wise, but the invulnerability save would help a lot against AP 1-2 weapons. But then again using cover would be cheaper and provide a better save. Overall is it worth the 40 pts?
The only time I would take warp field with a Tyrant, is if I planned on also giving it wings. Otherwise the armor upgrade is better points wise. A 6+ invuln save is just about worthless, like you said, try to get cover saves instead.
Overall, I'd say a winged, warp field equipped Tyrant is way too costly for a 750 point game. The toughness 6 should give most enemies in that point range a difficult time hurting it.
As noted above it is basically only effective for winged tyrants because they can't get carapace.
In small games I run a tyrant with one tyrant guard and then wrap it with gaunts. The guard is not a monsterous creature and he will be in cover due to the gaunts. Since the guard and the tyrant are a unit, and half of the unit is in cover, the whole unit will get the 4+ save until the guard dies.
This forces them to either shoot the guants, or to give you a 50/50 shot at avoiding their heavy guns.
The only drawback is that it increases the KP count, but its worth it!
