Welcome to Librarium Online!
So I was looking to buy my second Tyrant. My current one has two scything talons and wings so I was curious of what to put on the one I'm going to be walking with guard. The extra set of talons looks nice but I was curious what people thought of the bone sword and lash whip. I never really see it on the field and am kinda curious where they would come into play.
Nids 2500pts and Breeding!
Well I don't many people are going to say take the bonesword or lash whip.
-It would only be useful in a few situations...
--You can only use the psychic power at the beginning of your assault phase.
--When the unit dies it has to be in close combat.
--The unit has to be within 6" of the Hive Tyrant.
--The Opposition has to attack first otherwise you've already done your attacks while alive.
So, I could see bonesword coming into play if higher initiative models are attacking your hive tyrant and guards.
But the only way I could see this be a feasible choice is walking your Tyrant behind some CC carnifexes so that they will get to respond even with their very low initiative.
---Lash Whips are most useful against single powerful characters and aren't horrible if you're going after their baddest Daemon or Living God.
honestly I'd probably just go scything talons..if you want CC and (TL-Devs. or VC/BS for ranged).

Forget about the bonesword + lashwhip on the tyrant. You want to keep as many armor ignoring attacks as possible. If you're going to be walking the tyrant around with a guard, put the whips on the guards instead. You'd only be giving up one of their attacks instead.
As for the Catalyst ability from bonesword, I've seen it get wasted most of the time. It only works on your assault phase, not the opponents. Also, you have to remember to use it at the beginning of the assault phase.
The bonesword and lashwhip look cool but that is about all. Really it should be called the lashwhip and bonesword as the lashwhip is what is really useful. The bonesword will work against very few enemies. Most of them are going to be very high initiative types in a few armies. Flesh hooks will deal with the problem of people in cover and it is cheaper and maybe better if it lets you strike first. Hive tyrants also have the flesh hooks biomorph on the model.
I can understand that you want some variety in how your Hive tyrants look and if you want to use the lashwhip and bonesword they are fun to paint and look good. However the Hive tyrant will be a cheaper and nastier with two pairs of scything talons. You can give the Tyrant guard lashwhips for no cost. They will be more dangerous with it as they can reduce the attacks of single tough enemies by three. You will need to convert the Tyrant guard though.
I'm going to go against the grain here and say its not that bad. I usually face space wolves and numerous times my tyrant has gotten Thunder Hammered by a Terminator Command Squad and has not died. Next turn I attack at Initiative 1, but because of the sword I strike back and finish off the squad!
for 3pts more than Bonesword and Lashwhip you could have scything talons with catalyst mind power. You should have enough lashwhips with the guards already so if you really want the catalyst power this is another way to do it.
