I was wondering how other Tau commanders handle groups of drones being controlled in the same unit. IE 3 stealth units controlling 6 drones. I used to play it as all 6 drones being exactly alike, so as they die off there's nothing to keep track of. As long as there are enough models with drone controllers, the drone could continue to exist.
I've recently changed over to what I believe is the correct method now. I mark each drone with tau symbols, and the appropriate controller with the same markings. That way each drone is tied to it's controller, and will die off with it's controller as well.
I was also thinking this would change how wound allocation applies, as each set of drones are different in the respect that they have different controllers. So if one set of drones fails to make saves, the extra wounds would not carry over to the other models.
If further wounds were allocated to the Stealth's (and assuming each is identical in gaming terms) then you would roll their saves together and if any failed you would remove two Drones. Basically you would roll all the saves using different coloured die for different models and remove two Drones for each Stealth killed and one Drone for each failed Drone save. Any wounds left after all the Drones are removed are discarded.
It is up to you how you remove the Drones, if your Stealths all survived and three Drones died you could remove one for each Stealth (leaving each with one) or remove two (leaving a Stealth with no Drones) and remove from one from another Stealth. You need to figure something out to mark which model has no Drones or which has lost Drones (this is because you can remove the model with no Drones thus saving any Drones left under the control of another Stealth and avoiding any accusations of cheating etc)
As far as the Drones being different in respect to the fact they are controlled by different models, well this is incorrect. Models are only classed as different if their stat line or gear/weapons are different, Gun Drones are exactly the same stat and weapon wise so they would roll all their saves together.
