Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was sitting around thinking about how useless the Tyranid list is against all but the lightest of vehicles, and got to thinking about warp blast. Yes, it is short range, but what if you put it on a winged tyrant? Could you have two winged tyrants with warp field (I think that's the name of it...) zipping around blasting tanks with their bug brains? I know they would be in harm's way and expensive, but they would need no other upgrades, really, and if they pop a couple land raiders you couldn't deal with otherwise, wouldn't their death be worth it?
Is this a cost effective solution? Would they survive long enough to blast the tanks? Are we better off sitting back and watching the tanks to the venom-cannon-shake? I imagine this is not a great idea, or people would be doing it.
Sadly this has 2 main problems. 1 you can only have 1 winged tyrant per army and 2, you cant take warp blast and warpfield. However a build i have used with varrying of efficency, is a walkrant, with 2 TL deathspitters and warp blast, toxin sacs and enhanced senses. Hes also got 3 TG. This is mainly a light vehicle unit, it moves up, shooting at 24". When it gets in range, fire off the warp blast. If that hasnt worked, send in the unit for an assault. The TG have rending claws, so you can crunch vehicleswith them, and the blastrant (as i call it) is an MC. This is slightly more reliable than zoans, as they are prone to missing rather a lot. This set up is only realy suitable to kill rhinos ect. If you want to kill higher armoured vehicles, may i recogmend a CC flyrant.
Sadly, this cannot be done. We can only take one flying hive tyrant and tyrants can only get 1 psychic power, so it is either warp blast or warp field. As for an effective way of destroying tanks...I haven't found one. i usually move my sniperfexes up with the rest of my army and I can sometimes get them into CC with a tank, which is the only surefire way to kill tanks for us.
Ah, silly me. That's what I get for posting before checking the books. Dang. I just really hate that just about any army can have a few (or sometimes a ton of) things we just can't crack. I guess I should stop worrying and focus on holding objectives and mowing down the rest of the army. A CC Flyrant is ok for tanks, though?
Close combat monstrous creatures kill tanks.
My gaming group's new motto: That army you're using is overpowered because it hurts my guys, codex is broken and needs a rewrite.
ah, just noticed about the warp/senses thing, as i was wirting the post, i thought "why the heck dont i put warp blast on?" I felt quite clever after that. aparently not though. still its perfectly capable of gunning down a rhino, might just take longer. Ive also found that broodlords and genestealers can do as anti-tank, but there is much better things for them to destroy.
Zoanthropes might not be the most effect anti-tank we've got, but they do the job if given the opportunity. I just had a game against a Salamanders player, and my two 'Thropes took out a fair chunk of marines before one blew up his Land Raider and Ironclad Dreadnought. Judicious use of cover can keep them alive long enough to get close to a tank in a regular game.
Warpblast on a Hive tyrant can be good but it is best used as backup. I don't think that given the price of a Hive tyrant it is worth taking one mostly for the warpblast if you want anti-tank. Hive tyrants are better at assaulting to destroy tanks. A Hive tyrant with warpblast can't fire any other weapons even though it is a monstrous creature, just though I would say that with all the confusion about warpblast.
