It occured to me when picking out my heavy support choices. I was thinking, "is the heavy support area not full enough?" If the sniper teams were placed into the elite slot choice, ow many more people would take them as an alternative to stealth teams for taking out MEQ's? For example, stealth teams for providing effective geq killing help, and the sniper drone team for the meq, no? Maybe it would ust allow for too much firepower, but it just struckto me as an interesting thought.
I think it would make sense, seeing as how the Elites section of the codex is pretty sparse in comparison to the Heavy Support section. The choice would still be a difficult one - Crisis Suits or Stealth Suits vs. Sniper Drones, making it so that few players will spam the Sniper Drones in their lists. It would also provide a valuable anti-MEQ unit without having to drop one of the best units in the Tau Empire codex, the Hammerhead.
I could see something like that being balanced.
my first point was apart from points wise, the sniper drone team would be the perfect addition to XV8's, because one of the problems that team has, is ap3, we have reasonably balanced fire in the fireknife, short ranged, dangerous oblivion in the helios, good vehicle/transport killing in the deathrain, but nothing that reliably takes down meq, apart from centurian, but that relies a little bit too much luck, and even then requires a commander, or something with access to special wargear, and even then it has twice the range, and the stealth field, which gives the team most of the time some shots before the enemy gets into everage 2d6*3 roll range
It makes them a slightly more reasonable choice in lower point games too. If it still cost the 80 points it does now, you could take them if you didn't have ninety points for three stealth suits. Not only that, but you get another markerlight on the field as well as some decent ranged pinning weapons.
I think it would be a great option as an elite choice instead of a heavy support.
After all, the only two options we have for elites are the XV8s (versatile) and the Stealth Suits (not as versatile).
My platform is RL, you'd be surprised at the quality of the graphics!
I would like to see stealth teams moved to fast attack and something interesting I could see is Sniper Drones as members of firewarrior squads!
It would be our version of special weapons in a Firewarrior squad.
I agree though elites would also be a good spot, but I wouldn't say our heavy support is too crowded with 3 options.
I guess this is more of a wish list, but I would also like to see some improvements to the shaper say...a CC weapon he could take that improves strength.
I don't think we will see a new codex any time in the next few years though...
It just doesn't make sense to be strength 6 weapons into the heavy support slot.
I'm going to have to think about sniper drones as an elite choice. I'm sure the move will draw fire from marine players. On one hand it adds variety to elite choices (more so if stealths move to fast attack) but on the other hand players will whine about the amount of mid-high strength weapons Tau can field.
it's just a pity that the army book isn't up for a change for a while since we got updated recently :-/
Just because everyone else has their heavy support filled with 8+strength weapons (Well, almost everyone, off hand I know WitchHunters can use up their heavy support slots with heavy bolters and twinlinked heavy flamers) doesn't mean that Sniper Drones, armed with -heavy- weapons, and dedicated to -supporting- other units, don't belong in the heavy support slot.
Yes, there are seemingly better options available, but guess what, sacrifices have to be made. I wouldn't mind seeing sniper drones as elites either, however I have a pretty good feeling that if that were the case, a sniper drone team would take up one slot each instead of the pretty snazzy 1-3 option in Heavy, just to keep players from going for pure gunlines with a mass of Broadsides and Sniper Drones, with a couple of token troops hiding in the background. (Of course they'd still do that, since three teams of sniper drones to back up teams of broadsides still sounds like a nasty gunline to me)
(What I would actually like to see is 40k to have their elites and heavy support slots increasing by the overall points cost like Warhammer, instead of forcing a 2000 point army to have the same slots as a 500 patrol.)
