So i am starting an ork army, and i was wondering, are ork Shooty armies viable for tournies? And if so, what exactly is the best kind of list to be good at shooting? (I.e. Horde, Mek, Nob.. other)
It might depend on where you play, but at the tournaments I've gone too, I've found they like to run each mission at least once. This means you have to be prepared for two of Ork's worst enemies: Seize Ground, and Dawn of War.
Without outflanking or deep striking troops, Orks have to move all the way across the board to gain that single objective in the Seize Ground missions, and that means you're going to need at least one transport. For shooty armies, the best solution is to run battlewagons w/big shoota, grot riggers, and deffrolla, with units of 20 shoota boyz w/nob, powerklaw, bosspole, and 2 big shootas inside. This unit can shoot up the battlefield and move up closer and closer to the enemy as you go.
The only other 'shooty' option is to use large units of shoota boyz, and then run 1-2 units of trukks w/slugga boyz, or a unit of biker nobz, up the field to claim the objective. You could also take wazdakka and some warbikes as troops. That can work too.
The most shooty (and reliable) things in the Ork army are Lootas, Killa Kans, Big Gunz units, and Warbuggies. With exception of warbuggies, all of those units are either slow or stationary, and in either case, Dawn of War is going to give you trouble. I'm not saying you can't use these types of units, but don't exclusively rely on them, or the Dawn of War setup is going to be crippling.
So yes, shooty armies can definitely be competitive (last tournament I played a shooty Ork army and took 4th place...a cheesy as hell Chaos army eventually beat me).
Here are good 'shooty' units:
20-30 shoota boyz (either on foot or in a battlewagon)
5-6 warbikes w/nob, powerklaw, bosspole
3 Rokkit buggies
5 Deffkoptas w/big shootas
3 Big gunz (Kannons or Lobbas)
Looted Wagon w/boomgun, big shoota
3-5 Meganobz w/2-5 combi-scorchas, trukk, ram, and if you like, a warboss in mega armor w/cybork, and bosspole attached (you could also put them in a battlewagons)
Yes, meganobz are shooty units too. There isn't a better unit in the Ork army for quickly moving flamer shots right up into the enemy's front lines. They're more versatile than burnas, and with a warboss, they can claim objectives too. ^_^
In any case, good luck!

personally i dont see much fault in shooty since the ork guns are not that bad. you just need to ensure that you keep da boyz safe enough as they will be shot at and since they are not CC based they may find life difficult. if you run a shooty army i would recommend the big meks force field to give da boyz a much needed 5+ save and maybe some grots to use as a bullet shield since if the enemy has to shoot through a squad to hit the shootas the shootas get a 4+ cover save i believe. I would also recommend alot of boyz in the shooty army since casualties will be your biggest concerns. stack up on lootas too since they are a very nasty unit that will cause some serious pain to the enemy....thats probably the best i can give since i actually dont use shoota boyz and go all out sluggaz cause i like a good smash fest against da chaos boyz and they zerkers of khorne....WAAAGH!
So exactly how many non shooty elements should i have in.. lets say a 1500 point army? What kind of units are best to keep my dakka from getting Smacked down?
i would recommend to keep da boyz alive:
1. grots- they are cheap and you just need to ensure that the enemy will have to shoot through them so you can benefit from the 4+ cover save....just make sure you dont risk have to shoot through your own grotz and giving them a save lol
2. big mek with a kustom force field- gives da boyz a 5+ save within 6 inches so its absolutley worth it.
3. kans- another type of big shield to use cept this will live longer than the grotz and can block LOS to the shootas if placed properly
also maybe some deff coptas, warbuggies and such to divert his attention. also remember to pack the ever lovable big shootas with da shootaboyz. also maybe a mek with the shokk attack gun to provide long range support.
Ah.. I feel that everybody always overlooks what I feel is the most shooty unit in the Ork codex. Warbikers. I consider them tied with Lootas.
Lootas are your static heavy weapons, are great for taking out any non AV-14 vehicle, monstrous creatures, etc.
Warbikers are mobile, so you can place them where you need them, and every single one has a twin linked Big Shoota, albeit at half the range. Plus they're very durible, and still pack the close combat punch when used to support your other boyz.
If you're looking to run a Dakka list.. I'd suggest at least two units of 20x Shootas in a Battlewagon, as Grax suggested, supported by Warbikers. The trick is to play them like you would Eldar.. use your mobility to your advantage, and pick your fights carefully.
I've recently become a fan of this thing called Dubstep. And you should too.

The best way to get combat units in a shooty list is PKs in your Shoota mobs. Shootas can fight and shoot very well.
Lootas and Big Gunz are static uber firepower, Kanz, Shootas, Buggies, and Bikes are all mobile.
