Welcome to Librarium Online!
A friend of mine who play's Tau wanted to know a good strategy versus assault/swarm type Tyranid armies. Whats a good strategy he should work with and what units/weapons should he be taking?
Mechanised Tau style (Devilfish with Fire Warriors mounted up), with Flechette Dischargers on his vehicles. High rate of fire weapons like burst cannons and missile pods. Hammerheads with Railguns for the pie plate of death and keep on the move.
"Tau Commandment #226: Participants who use Velocity Trackers in the Tau Clay Pigeon Tournament will be disqualified"
also, if he has glued an ion cannon on his hammerhead instead of the railgun, then he can use that against carnifex no problem. seeker missiles are also carnifex killers.
the priority will be anti-synapse creature tactics. as always
Tyranids are really not that hampered by lack of synapse.
Synapse does two things:
1 - Prevents insta-killing of creatures in synapse. Any Tyranid model with more than one wound either is a synapse creature or has toughness too high to insta-kill.
2 - Allows you to control tyranids. Note that if Tyranids are not in synapse range, they can still shoot. Tyranids are a very shooty army, and this is not a problem at all. Plus, tyranids fall back to the nearest synapse creature. Usually, this will be in the direction they were heading anyways. Considering that a normal move is 6" and a fall-back move is 2d6, you're essentially helping them get closer. Plus, they can fleet/run in addition to this movement.
Do not distract yourself by focusing on synapse creatures.
If you can somehow wipe out all their synapse creatures, gofor it. It is, however, unlikely. Your fire is better spent focusing on threats.
Yes of course you should focus on threats goes without saying. but seriously - getting rid of the synapse helps so much.
however - a time when you can make synapse work for you is when you want to assault a lot of gaunts, and make them take extra wounds because they are fearless when they lose a combat. but that doesn't apply to the Tau anti tyranid tactics.
What I am saying that focusing on synapse a waste and does not help "so much".
Would Kroot be a good choice here? Perhaps with hounds?
