Do you use them? When?
I rarely use Warp Beasts (mainly because I rarely field wyches), but I only like them when I use a Webway Portal. They disintegrate under fire and are most powerful on the charge, so I have them assault right out of the WWP.
Their relatively high number of attacks (plus agonizers!) make me choose weaker armored targets first, especially if they're fast and would get the charge otherwise.
On a side note, I dislike the Warp Beast models and use converted Genestealers.
I do not normally use them as they are easy killpoints and very hard to hide from shooting. So far I have used them only once and that was only because someone wanted to play a 3,000 point game and was running out of units, available slots and raiders so they got the nod.
I used them the same way in 4th as I do in 5th as a counter-charger for foot slogging Warriors. One made a charge against some marines, killed 3 marines and then died. The other got charged while screening the warriors by assault marines and they lost 2 to shooting, passed morale (dang!) and then died in assault while not dealing any damage.
I can't say my mind has changed on this unit - too fragile to shooting (thank you 5th) and they are an easy kill point.
"On a hunch, I melted them down and inhaled the fumes and read the dark eldar codex again, AND FOUND A BUNCH OF NEW RULES HIDDEN BEHIND THE OTHER WORDS..." [Gardeth on modelling & interpreting the DE Codex]
I don't use them due to their lack of plasma grenades. Any assault unit without plasma grenades isn't much of an assault unit. For counter charging i'd use a talos, while the talos doesn't have grenades, its toughness and armor save give it some survivability.
I used to use them extensively in 4th ed. I tended to use them as a kamikazee missile, to tie up or weaken enemy units until the wyches arrived. In 5ht they are far to easy of a killpoint and with the loss of the WWP as a viable option they will never get to fight if your opponent has any ranged capability.
I have to second Gardeth's method of play here.
Some players use them to mop after an event whereas I have always seen their charge range more in keeping for use before the event, getting there first, dying and then their friends the Wyches have a much easier time of it and even rarely the Wyches are not needed at all!
But as said they are an easy point to the opponent so any list with them in looks more like going for a wipeout style of win.
They are a good way to get a cheap Agoniser attack though.
In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.
Thanks for the replies, I was just trying to decide if I should paint them up or wait. I bought them during 3rd edition then got out of 40k for a while, now that I'm back I'm pulling all these old minies out and painting them up. I was really looking at them in 5th edition rules and they didn't look all that good, so I thought I would ask. Looks like they go back int he box.
