Welcome to Librarium Online!
I really like the Vyper models and was wanting to field them in my army. I'm new to Eldar so is there any combination i could equip my Vypers with to make them effective tank hunter or just a balanced and versitile killers?
PS: Im going to be fielding two in my army.
I haven't gotten to play with them that much in 5th.
You could give them bright lances to go tank hunting. But between low BS, high cost, and the shorter range I suggest leaving that to something else.
I would advise either:
the standard scatter laser ( Solid against the AV11 you see on the sides of many tanks. And all around good against rhinos. Decent range, low cost. Probably the most common option.
or the Eldar Missile Launcher. Not too pricey and very long range with the option to hunt slightly heavier armor. You'll want to study the blast rules well though.
Both can make decent anti infantry weapons. Scatter being better against MEQ and EML better against groups of armor 4+ or 5+ models and/or groups with low LD.
You can have the vypers as one unit or two.
Separate used to be the only way to go as they can seperately target, manuver, and a whole bunch of hits on one doesn't affect the other.
However with the current squad rules I'm not so sure.
A. Separately they are two kill points instead of one
B. free spirit stones as a group
C. Can keep tossing hits, so long as they come one at a time, onto an already damaged model.
D. Cover. If one is in cover they both are. So if one can manage to hide 50% of itself behind a tree or something (easy to do and still fire well thanks to the turret on the butt). Than the other can hang out right in the open and still take the 4+ save. This makes saves a whole lot easier to get.
Though of course it does depend on how you plan to use them. If you're adding them to an all MEQ list that gets right in the enemies face with a 24" jump followed by shooting/assault than maybe dual shuricannons are for you.
I'm planning on fielding a fully MEQ list. Two Wave Serpents, Falcon, five Jetbikes, Vyper Squadron and Wraithlords. So Scatter lasers would be some what of a sound choice to use on my Vypers?
It depends, it is not a rule I field field a Falcon, two Prisms, three Serpents and two squadrons consisting of two Vypers with EML each. And they work perfect (especially as enemy has always better targets to shoot). They provide me with Missiles when my other Missile-armed vehicles have to move all ahead full due to lakc of cover or need of disembarking troops. Missiles are perfect for dealing with anything between Fire Warriors that just disembarked form Devilfish (hiehiehiehiehhhhh... that was Evil from my part) and Daemon Princes (who not only have maximum T of 6, but also maximum Sv of 3+). And vehicles as well, especially Rhinos.
2 Scatters = 4 hits.
1/6 penetration chance * 4 = 2/3
1/6 glance chance = 2/3
2 Missiles = 1 hit.
1/2 penetration chance * 1 = 1/2
1/6 glance chance * 1 = 1/6
All in all the difference is not really big. However, EML CAN hurt Av 12 or even 13 (the same battle... heroic Vyper an alone on right flank pops out of forest and fires missile into front of damn Hammer... explosion was wanderful, the firer survived the battle) and SL cannot.
When I field them they generally are EML and Shuriken cannon. The range of the EML lets me sit back at range so them take less return fire, it has the chance to hit tanks and MCs with the krak. Once things get close I move and shoot the shuriken cannon and the plasma as a defensive weapon. It adds up to a decent amount of hits and wounds on infantry. They are not my first choice in an army generally but they have done well from time to time for me.
It really depends on what is in those serpents and what your units are equipped with.
Vypers can be equipped to deal with any problem.
I used to use EMLs at the start of 5th edition, but have since gone away from them because of the poor ballistic skill of Vyper crews. I would recommend anything with multiple shots, starcannons, scatter lasers, or shuriken cannons.
I personally use starcannons now, because I run a jetbike army. I have tons of AP5 shots, but punching through terminator armor was an issue. The vypers equipped with those lovely ap2 shots fixed the problem. I wouldn't worry about the av10 too much, vehicles are very tough in 5th edition. Getting 4+ saves is super easy, and there is almost always something more important to shoot at than vypers. Just keep them cheap, NO UPGRADES.
I've used Vypers to limited success. AV10 is a problem, even with cover. Being vulnerable to Pulse Rifles and Bolters is a problem. Thus, even dancing around 36" is risky when a unit of jump infantry could shoot down your vypers.
For that, Eldar Missile Launchers have versatility and range. Plus, they're really not expensive compared to other choices.
As much as it pains me to waste a Heavy slot, War Walkers tend to be better choices over Vypers. A War Walker with 2 EML costs 5pt more than a Vyper with a single EML. With the range of an EML, you can shove your Walkers behind cover and they'll be fine. Vypers have the option of going flat-out, but that is a waste of shooting.
They are handy choices if you find yourself all maxed out on heavy support and want more artillery.
I tend to run my Vypers with EML's and catapults. That way I can move 12" every turn and look to move to a position 40-something inches away from my target and out of range/sight of return fire. The BS isn't great but they can be very handy for dealing with straggler vehicles or just adding more anti-infantry fire with Plasma missiles, with the added bonus that they also generate more pinning tests that way as well.
