Welcome to Librarium Online!
I want to take a big mek with a schokk attack gun in my army, but he needs a bodygaurd. I don't want to use lootas as bodygaurd, because then they can't fire at diffrent units. If he's all alone, then he will be killed by a random missle laucher or other s 8 or higher weapon. I was thinking about using grots as bodygaurd, but is this advisable?
for sheer wound absorbtion?: yes.
For the fluff? (grots for ammo): yes.
I think It's a good idea if all you want are a bunch of cheap meat sheilds.

I have heard of a nasty combinaiton of keeping a Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun and a Boss Pole and putting him with a unit of Big Gunz. Together, they have a wonderful Synergy. The Big Gunz low leadership is bolstered by the Boss Pole and the Mek's 8 Ld, which only takes one model when they fail, rather than 2-3 with a Squig Hound. Also, the Mek and Gunz, due to the rules on mixed squads with vehicles, can fire upon different units, which keeps it strategically sound to keep him there, protected from fire.
Great little combo that is.
Most of the time I use the SAG Mek I give him a boospole and attach him to a group of 19 grots. 20 more wounds and allows the unit to capture an objective in your starting zone!

He's right, although it has nothing to do with mixed squads with vehicles, as the artillery isn't a vehicle, despite having an armor value.
Artillery has rules all of their own, and it DOES say that if an independent character joins, then it may fire at a different unit than the artillery fires at. (Page 55 of the small rulebook)
It's a nasty combination, although I prefer attaching them to units of grots, since you get more wounds that way, and you can sit on an objective while you do it. The grots are also a bit more low key than the big guns, but either can work, so it's up to you.

yeah, just for clarification, because if it is legal, i'll totally do it!

Damn, I gotta jump on this... I think I now have the justification I need to convert some big gunz out of fantasy bitz...

The big gunz are indeed another option, too bad I don't have the heavy support slots to do it (already use 3 battlewagons).
