Welcome to Librarium Online!
Ok, so after chilling out of 40k for quite a while and picked up fantasy, it's become quite apparent how few people really play fantasy around my areas. So instead of doing the usual looking into a codex and finding the biggest power gaming idea I can bring to the table, I decided to go with an army that lacks both players and power, obviously Dark Eldar. But after buying the book, I've started to wonder, with rumors of the new book and models, is it too late to start DE?
I don't think so. Depending on how fast you can get a DE army to play with, you still have plenty of time in my opinion. Rumor has it that there will be new stuff for the DE in 2010: in my experience, that will probably be near 2011.
I've started DE recently with almost the same reasons you have: nobody plays them, and I want to find out how a never-updated army competes against popular ones like Space Marines.
Get the battlebox, which gives you over 500 points to start with, and raise hell!
Innovation suffuses this hobby like a tea bag in the boiling water of play.
Nope,it's never to late to start DE aslong as you can get a army together quickly then go for it,but i have to say DE are not beginner friendly,in meaning there hard to use until you master them.
Eradicating chav scum since 2005!
Although I agree that few people play DE overall, I'm one of two at my local GW, but they in no way lack power as the OP suggests.
(WH40K) Dark Eldar - (12,000pts) Sisters of Battle - (5000pts) Dark Angels -(3500pts) (WHFB) Dark Elves - (10,000pts) Beastmen - (5000pts) Empire - (3000pts) Wood Elves - (1500pts)
DE are like the red headed stepchildren of GWS. But once you get their tactics down, they tear apart everything. Honestly, they're one of the more powerful, if not the most powerful, armies in the game. They just take a while to get used to, and a long time to master.
Yes, I did deep-strike your sister...
Necrons : W-8 D-3 L-7 (Sleeping in their TombFoam, waiting for a new codex)
Chaos Forces (CSM/CD): W-42 D-19 L-28
Apocalypse Games : W-4 D-0 L-1 (4 Titans, Brass Scorp, 3 Baneblades, 2 Bombers, 3 Fighters, and a Partrage in a Pear Tree)
Alright, that's pretty cool. When my codex comes in, I'll post up an army list. Are Talos really all that viable? I would love to use three in conjunction with a WWP
About starting the army, I personally would wait.
I want my whole army to have the same kind of models (at least warriors so I don't have squads of new AND old fielded at the same time) so I myself am in a bit of a rush to finish my army, but if you like the old models, go for it!
I plan on converting all of my warriors from guardians, warriors and dire avengers... And possibly any Elf related army.
It would be better to start now so you can master the tactics and feel of Dark Eldar (something that will remain the same through the codex change) Its better to get the help of all the people who know the current codex inside and out then to wait and be new to DE tactics and have no help from other players because they are just as green to the changes as you.
"Thank him who puts me loath to this revenge on you who wrong me not for him who wrongd"
Well for a start I am simply going to add to my collection when the new ones finally arrive and there is no way that any model in the Citadel range is ever going to be outdated as long as there is a Codex to support them.
This war-game does not ‘date’ like computer games do as models are just lumps of plastic and lead that are given rules and abilities, and even then conversions save the day for any war-gear orientated problems that can pop up with rules changes.
A Raider will always be a Raider, no matter if its mark1 or mark34 and a Wych will always be a Wych. Do you think that just because new rules may come out that all of a sudden the old models won’t work anymore?
And the older Codex’s simply become collectables and a great insight of how it used to be, and as such nothing is ever wasted here.
To sum up I look forward to proudly fielding my vintage DE army along the newer upstarts in the range and if anyone wants to give me their ‘old’ out of date DE models when the new ones come out they know where to find me!
(As for buying them right now I would expect that a ‘last years model run-out – sale’ might apply for anything second hand even now, and when the new releases appear, GW may follow suit with old stock. So Be proud – Be Retro!)
