how effective is it? 12 shots at BS 4 reroll to wound and hit... sounds good, but its 18" range. Is it not common for the thing to just get charged? It seems very fragile.. Would u prefer this or a CC flyrant?
I know not what weapons World War 3 will be fought with. All I know is that World War 4 will be fought with sticks and stones.
Assuming assault range vs. MEQs, the dakka tyrant will kill:
shooting: 12*(2/3) * (2/3) * (1/3) = 1.78 marines
assault: 4*(2/3) * (5/6) = 2.22
Total deaths from shoot+assault = 4
Now the CC tyrant gets no shooting, but on the assault (assuming TS and 2x ST) will kill:
6*(2/3) * (5/6) = 3.33
So the dakka tyrant statistically kills more models than the CC tyrant. On top of the shoot + Assault, you'll be shooting some round w/out assaulting. So you'll be inflicting wounds even outside of assault range.
I like wings on my dakka tyrant. With warp field the model comes out at 200 pts. The psycholocigal effect of the model is pretty impressive. He's an entire front of my army by himself.
Hope that helps.
As for the being assaulted issue, it's no big deal. A HT is not easy to bring down in CC, even with the hidden power fist. If the model has no wings, just throw a couple of guard with him to protect (you'll be able to put the PF wounds on the guard) and if the model has wings, learn where the 12"-18" sweet spot is and put your tyrant there. You'll get to shoot and you should be out of most model assault range.

12x(2/3+1/3x2/3[%chance to re-roll])x(2/3+1/3x2/3[%chance to re-roll])x1/3 = 3.16 marines
Total deaths from shoot+assault = 5.38
The Dakka-flyrant w/Warp Field is probably one of the most dangerous units in all of 40K. Personally I wouldn't use him to assault unless if the opponent had great ranged firepower.
I would just stay out of the reach of the opponents assault and keep firing. I've seen a lone flyrant take out over half an army of spacewolves this way because they didn't have adequate long range firepower (mainly just boltguns and a couple of assault cannons). He probably took down over 800pts of space puppies.
I am not anti Dakka tyrant, I just like to point out that you should count both assault phases instead of just the one when you charge. So the Dakka tyrant gets about 7 wounds, whlie the Scything tyrant gets about 6. The Scything advantage is that enemies take moral tests with a higher modifier because they lose all of the wounds in CC, while the Dakka tyrant does more wounds. Based on that I use both, giving my flyrant scyths and my walker dakka.
