I played a game today in which my opponent used 2 land speders. i dominated for the intire game, until turn 7 when he moved 24" on to an objective i was claiming and won the game. how are we supposed to counter this? i figure glancing them with venom cannons could work but it would be a bit unrelyable as half the time its only a shooting penalty inflicted. HELP!
I don't really like Venom Cannons. Half of the shots miss, and you'll only get glancing hits. Instead, I'd use 'Fexes equipped with a Barbed Strangler and a TL Deathspitter. Both weapons together cost as much as a single VC, and I've found them to be better against low-armor vehicles, and MUCH better against infantry. As for vehicles with heavier armor? CC fexes.
I thought that Land speeders were open-topped. Penetrating hits, yey!
I've had some problem dealing with this stuff, but I just simply ignores them until the end draws near, then I shoot the buggers down. Unless it's Fast skimmer tanks like wave serpents or Falcons. I then tries to make them stunned or something so they can't move!
Only Scout Landspeeders count as open-topped otherwise they are just fast skimmers. TL-Deathspitters and Barbed Stranglers should give you good versatility and the venom cannon isn't horrible because the high strength. While not the most effective if you use Termagaunts with Fleshborers their strength can still glance and you should have quite a few shots.
The problem with VC against fast skimmers is that they can easily get a save for moving fast, so it's really unlikely it'll do anything. Of course, it still is useful against some units, but I wished it at least had a better AP.
thing is, if they got a save they're probably close to you(depending on mission and turns) so that you can spam them with shots.
but well, if there are any fast skimmers left by the end of the game that is capable of making it to your objective you just gotta think something smart. What's best? Massed S4 shots or a fewer strong shots?
I'm surprised no one has suggested dakkafexes. 8 s6 shots, hit an average of 6, 2 pen, one glance, one pen saved if it moved fast, and you destroy it on a 5+ with the pen. The odds of stopping it are pretty good, especially if it didn't move over 12" in which case you have a 50% chance of destroying it (1-(1-3/4*1/3*1/3)^8~50%). If it did move over 12" the odds of destroying it are ~29%. I very much doubt a fex with a DS and BS could match those odds, especially with the whole halving strength if you don't hit it directly thing.

I've had this happen to me twice now. Last turn turbo boost to contest an objective. First time was with a land speeder and caught me by surprise. Second time was with an eldar tank (can't remember which one). Second time I saw it coming and then spent my entire movement phase putting units between the tank and the objective. Forced him to tank shock my models and attempted death or glory attacks.
As the land speeder is not a tank, it can't tank shock. So your best bet is to take a unit of gaunts and surround the objective in such a way that there is no room for the land speeder to land on top of the objective or within 3" of it.

various good ideas there, forgot about skimmers not tank shocking so the psysical barreir is a good idea, ive gone off venom cannons, as to stop the vehicle from moving is too unlikly a chance. the blast templates are a good idea, and ill try out a dakka fex and see if it works or not. i had considerd using a fex with crushing claws and a strangler, knocking them out for movement, before smashing them in assault, any thoughts on that one? Had also considerd using hormagaunts to glance it to death, not sure how that would work though
