I usually take one "token" heavy destroyer in my army list and he usually manages to make back him points. There are a few different techniques I use with him and wanted to share.
#1. Fire from the Rear - This is the standard screen him with your warriors and keep him in the back, but in range of you targets.
#2. Look at Me! - This is when you take him and run him up toward a tank or something that he can take out, if you fail to it isn't a big deal since now your opponent is torn on shooting the one heavy or putting fire into a larger group. People tend to forget about trying to phase you out when they might lose a tank or something important.
#3. Money in the Middle - Take a squad of 5 destroyers and place them surrounding the heavy. Now no one can see him and shoot at him.
So what type of things do you do with heavies?
i usually just keep my hd's at the back of my army. there's always something they can shoot on. main targets are tanks and terminators, and sometimes plague marines.
"I have seen you humans, trying to forge an Empire in the name of a corpse"
i run all three of mine as a distraction
I think a great bumper sticker would be as follows:
Proud parent of a child whose self-confidence is good enough that he doesn't need me advertising his minor scholastic achievements on my carclick me
I usually take two.
I often play against a World Eaters friend of mine who takes a Defiler with inderect fire and sits him behind terrain (yes thats right, in a freakin World Eater's army)
when this happens I take a lord with VoD and teleport them so that they can fire on its back or side armor  (he always forgets I can do that hehehe)
"I am the architect of fate!"
I usually use my HDs as bait for Khorne Berserkers.
And over there we have the labyrinth guards.
One always lies, one always tells the truth, and one stabs people who ask tricky questions.
I like to use my heavy destroyers to bust tanks =|
