Well this month i happened to sell some old computer equipment and feel like expanding my army options a little bit.
i currently have:
1 seer council
5 dire avengers
10 guardians including heavy support weapon
4 striking scorpions
1 pheonix lord karandras
5 dark reapers
6 fire dragons
6 harlequins including troupe master
1 wave serpent
1 war walker
what should i add?
im debating between:
1. buying the 6 pack of scorps to round it to 10
2. expanding my harlequins to include a death jester and shadowseer, and 2 more normal units to round to 10.
3. howling banshees
4. shining spears (are these any good?)
5. swooping hawks
i have enough money for pretty much any expansion. i possibly also want another hq. eldrad is the man though.
thanks for any tips!
I havnt got any eldar yet but im planning on getting 2 waritlords, and two squads of banshees (in wave serpents) i think they are good, so buy them
I would highly suggest getting more troops rather than loading up on more tasty stuff. Troops are the only groups which can hold objectives, and dire avengers perform the best at full strength of 10. While a box comes with 10, you could split them into groups of 7 and 8 and will have enough parts to make two exarchs, which is where the power is.
Especially when you currently have 2 min sized troop squads, 3 HQ, 3 Elite and 3 Heavy, you should not be adding more until you have more scoring units.
Also for the scorpions, I'm pretty sure that Karandras is an independent char, and to field the scorpions you'll need at least 5 for a minimum, then attach him to it? You would need at least 1 more to use the group then.
Finally, with a group of Harlies, I would highly recommend the seer as it will greatly improve the survival of the group. Getting banshees will be redundant as the harlies can do the same. Also, banshees should be given a waveserpent to get in ASAP, but since you only have 1 (fire dragons should use the one you have now), you would need to get another in addition to the banshees.
1. Dire Avengers
2. A couple scorpions
3. Shadowseer + whatever other harlies you like
This will improve your army & each squad's effectiveness!
My only addition the above suggestions is that Dire Avengers are great in Wave Serpents, so it's nice to get some for that. If you are at all interested in war walkers or guardians then I would pick up the battle set, which will round out your DA's to 10, give you the wave serpent for them, and you'll pick up guardians and a war walker to boot.
Definitely agree that you badly need more troops. Finishing off the Dire Avengers squad would be a very good idea, maybe even add a second squad. Not to mention you need another Wave Serpent for them. If you like speedy late game objective takers then bikes are a great idea. With their Turbo-boost speed, higher toughness, and extra move in the assault phase, they are tough to take down.
As for the stuff you are considering getting I'd definitely say that the Scorpions should be rounded out as well.
Thank you for the replies everyone. I went ahead and got a few things:
1. shadowseer, death jester, 2 more harlies to round to 10
2. the 6 pack of scorpions to round to 10
3. the 10 pack of dires which i will be splitting up with my current 5
4. an avatar for the hell of it
my serpent has been murdered ruthlessly on turn 1 every game but 1. vehicles IMO suck. i understand the transport option, but that 12 armor is tissue paper.
Well i think you picked some nice choices, i hope they serve you well.
I have to disagree with you on "Vehicles suck," especially with the Wave Serpent in 5th edition. It only has a 12 armor yes, but the Energy Shield in combination with it's Flat Out speed cover save makes it very hard to kill. I can understand your Wave Serpent dieing turn 1 because you only have 1 vehicle. It makes it easy for them to focus fire it.
I myself typically run with 2 Wave Serpents, multiple Vypers, and a Falcon (with troops inside). They can't possibly take out all those vehicles turn one... especially with all the transports going Flat Out to deliver goods.
Anyway, have fun!
i would like to get a vyper or jetbike squad, but at $11.50 PER MODEL thats a big pass.
Ya true that on both. I would take full squadrons of vypers if they werent so expensive $$ wise. They look amazing too!
The other is w vehicles as Opius stated. Since you only have 1 it will eat all the heavy fire your opponent has which it why it seems weak. The rule of thumb is to use a lot of vehicles to full out mech, or take none at all.
Mixes dont perform as well since part of your army will be left behind and the part shipped in will have no support. Try proxying some waveserpents for your other squads for a couple games and see how you like it. You can also try using your harlies w their new shadowseer to screen your army on foot since they will unlikely be able to fire at them and if they try to shoot something else behind they get a cover save!
i tend to move my whole squad as close to each other as possible, but spread thin at the same time. that way i have massive firepower yet less vulnerability to blasts.
i usually lead the pack with my eldrad and whoeever he is attached to, for the delicious rerolls on saves. i once had my 5 dires + eldrad kill a 10 man tac squad + force commander, with only 1 casulty. god bless eldrad.
im excited to expand my army. i much prefer the footsloggers to the mechanized route.
