Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm trying to decide what to add next as I grow my army into something decent for 5th.
Right now I'm a mech force with guardians, DA, Scorps, and Warlocks all in serpents. Guardians stay back and fire away on home objectives while they donate their rides in case any of the other serps go down as the rest of my forces move around and fire or drive into the enemy.
Anyway I was planning to get fire prisms in order to grow. They'd both add more armor 12 skimmers for the enemy to deal with and give me some anti-armor that is flexible as well. Plus they're one of the few Eldar things that is effective against monoliths.
However as the metagame keeps shifting to everyone being mechanized or running a lot of MC and so much deepstriking, I'm starting to wonder if their range isn't just a waste, and I'd be better of with dragons.
Prisms can hit further away to occasionally down enemy vehicles. But dragons nearly guarantee a kill against anything but a monolith. They tend to vaporize MCs as well in one volley.
Granted they wind up close to the enemy. But if I'm playing close with other units there isn't much extra risk there. And hopefully that bit will be walloped. i.e. dragons pop a land raider, DA thin the crowd, warlocks finish the leftovers. skimmers try and shield all of them from ranged fire.
Granted they aren't as good against hoards. But it seems like even Orcs aren't running hoards these days.
I too suggest Dragons over Prisms in the case of "Big Game Hunters"
Sure they die after hitting the target, but they usually make their points back with a single even against the modern day cheap AC/HB preds! lol.
Let me see if i can help with your decision.
First question is are you willing to put 2 Prisms in you list. If not I say Dragons hands down.
If you are willing to go with 2 Prisms then do it. The combining of the beams is excellent for killing both tanks and infantry with High Armor and if you need the extra shots to kill hoards then you can have each of them fire at a different target. Weather you use the focused or dispersed shot.
The Dragons are a one trick pony. Giving the Exarch a flame thrower makes them better for infantry but only a little bit. However they do kill tanks great. Mechanizing them just makes them a fun little surprise.
My vote is to use the two prisms if your willing to take both. even though the two prisms will be more points then the dragons on a serpent.
Army's used: Space Wolves, Tomb Kings, High Elves, Tyranids, Tau and Eldar.
I like dragons! If you load up a bunch of em (10 ) and drop em in a wave serpent you can really piss off anyone that uses high priced heavy infantry AND kill tanks, but if you use em like I do most of the time you can just take six, put em in a falcon and kill tanks at will.
Since people are asking about specific unit composition I'm up for advice.
But really it's between two prisms or a unit of fire dragons in a wave serpent. With those options being roughly the same cost if holo fields are included with the prisms.
Hello Sunny !
I go for Dragons. I have tried 2 Prisms (mostly in 4th ed, though), and I have been disappointed every time. I think the key is quite simply in the number of shots you get. I believe in numbers ;-)

It's not really a fair competetion - they're both completely different units.
On one hand Fire Dragons in a wave serpent are an extremely mobile unit, that are difficult to take out while they're inside their tank, and are geared almost solely for the utter destruction of enemy vehicles.
Two Fire Prisms are a mobile and highly versatile extremely powerful base of support fire for the rest of your army, although they lack the 100% of killing something every turn (they scatter), and without holo-fields, won't be toomuch trouble for your opponent to take out.
I'd hate to have to make the choice, all the lists I run (above 1k) use both. Having said that, I take two fire prisms in all my lists, so My vote would have to go to them.
Fire dragons always deliver for me, that is, they deliver once, then die. Two fireprisms with holo-fields are pricey, but most opponents who are familiar with holo-fields that i've played give up on firing at them in lieu of another target. The range and mobility of fireprisms is outstanding, and they usualy survive to be two objective contesters at the end of turn 5-6-7. that having said, i vote fire prisms.
Inicidentally, i usually run two fireprisms and one stripped down falcon full of fire dragons. It allows the falcon to take pot shots at range, then deliver the goods when i need too. My opponents (and i) have FORGOTTEN about the fire dragons more than once, making a very nice surprise.
The problem I have with Dragons is how they will almost always kill the thing you fire at them with, but then immediately die in the next turn. Such close range is too dangerous for them, even with a transport. The Prism however is much better at long range support firing and even though a lucky railgun shot,, for example, could wreck it, it still has more oomph to it. I'd vote for the Prism.
This thread is pointless. In abilities, Dragons hunt vehicles and Prisms hunt Infantry. Both can efficiently but not brilliantly kill terminators. Dragon are Elite, while PRisms are Heavy SUpport. So ain't no gettin both of them? Why not? I can't imagine playing my mech without BOTH.
