I was just wondering about somthing here, ive often seen people take 3 war walkers with scatter lasers, pumping out 24 shots a turn. However i was thinking that it might be better to have 6 EMls on the basis that theyre ap4, will always fire, just might scatter a bit, and could be used the knock out tanks in a crisis. Is there a blatant mistake im missing?
I've found EMLs to be very nasty to face. As a DE player a barrage of those generally spells doom for a squad and they can easily pop light to med. tanks, especially with such a concentration of them.

The short answer is that they just aren't reliable enough. I have run them, and on paper it sounds great, but it just doesn't work out.

I always like bringing a doomseer with guide (on a bike) and that so nasty with a full squad of scatter-walkers. Sure you have no chance for popping anything above a 12, but short of a landraider of monolith you can easily hit the tender side or rear armor with out-flank.

I think both can be effective, my big thing with them is simple... price. It's only 10 points per model... but sometimes 30 points can come in really handy elsewhere... Personally, if you want to go really cheap, and if you are outflanking, shuriken cannons can also be effective... Especially when you think you can get 18 shots for 120 points as opposed to 16 for 120 points with scatter lasers (and one more whole walker).
I dont like the 24 inches of shuricannons, the fact that scatter lasers can shoot 33 percent farther is extremely important.

And Im not gonna even get into versus horde cause scatters will shred horde. Missiles can be good against vehicles, yes, but ive found that walkers can be too.

The only time missiles can outperform is with armor value 12 or more vehicles, everything else goes to scatter.

Against massive hordes, the EMLs in plasma mode might have a slight advantage, but against anything else, I find that they scatter off target far too often. Then if they do hit, they're only strength 4, so you're less likely to wound.
It's true that they are "better" against armor 12+ compared to Scatter Lasers, but they really aren't the best for that. There are much better platforms for anti-tank available, so I really don't think EML Walkers are worth the price.
As for Shuriken Cannon walkers, they do have short range, but they are dirt cheap, and if you outflank with them, it's not too difficult to get into that range without getting shot to pieces.
